“The visitor center in Flagstaff knows if its running and the best way to go”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2010

It has been a particularly wet summer in Flagstaff, so when we arrived in August, my husband, who has lived there, wondered if the waterfall would be running. We checked with the Flagstaff Visitor Center, they said "Yes" and gave us a map and told us the best route to take. They suggested using a car with 4WD, but we took a mini van and with some caution we were fine. (The rain had messed with some if the roads). Although we didn't use our GPS, I was glad we had it. When we got there we found other locals who knew to check it out, some covered picnic tables and charcoal grills (wish we'd brought some BBQ things), and an AWESOME waterfall. It is a river of mud, and unlike anything else we'd ever seen. Worth the trip

“Great adventure for the family”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2010

The journey out to these falls is a little tricky. There are very few road signs and our GPS would have had us going in circles if I had followed it. The falls here are very interesting. When the water is there in the spring, it is muddy, so it looks like chocolate. These falls are nicknamed the "Chocolate Falls". When we were there today, though, the falls were pretty clear looking. We found a relatively easy path down to the base of the falls. Then we climbed up some of the rocks to the sides of the falls and then did a more adventurous and precarious climb back out of the canyon by a different route. My kids loved the adventure of it all. You can't "buy" this type of experience anywhere. It is much better for the kids to be out exploring and trying new things while enjoying God's creation.

“Chocolate Waterfall”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2009

This is a cool waterfall. We were stuck on a crosscountry trip in Flag on a Friday, waiting for a part to come in for my truck on Monday, so we did a bit of driving about and looking at things I might not normally look at, like the Lava Tube and the Grand Falls. The Grand Falls is maybe not Grand, but it is rather cool in that the water is very muddy, like a chocolate brown, so when it goes over the water falls, it looks like chocolate milk or just a waterfall of chocolate, a bit like Willy Wonka's river and falls. :) Too bad it is just mud, but it is fun to see if you're just looking for something in Flag to do. Be careful on driving out there. A GPS can help because the signs were not well marked when we went, but as we got closer, we used our ears as direction finders.

Also, if you like this, another cool view is the confluence of the Little Colorado into the Colorado, along the Grand Canyon. Great to see from a helicopter ride over the canyon or if you take a raft trip down the canyon, most trips will stop at that point. Be sure to ask about it.
