3=meets expectations, 4=exceeds.
Heading up from Sedona for an overnight stay at the Grand Canyon gave us time for this 3 hour diversion. You could spend more time, or less, depending on how many stops you make at Sunset Monument and Wupatki Monument.
On a winter week-day late morning, we did the 1-mile long "Lava Flow" interpretive loop in almost solitude. There was a couple just finishing when we started, and a group of 4 starting when we finished. On thing that particularly intrigued me was a stop where you looked out to the San Francisco mountain complex and the booklet outlines what the stratovolcano would've looked like before it blew. Cool!
If you've gotten your fill of Idaho's Craters of the Moon NM any time recently and are at all pressed for time, you can probably skip this volcanic NM; it's not as desolate and arresting as the CMNM.
