Lots of Lava, but not much else. We had just come from Walnut Canyon, which was so impressive! Only bother if you hqave some extra time.

The lave flow trail is a must. Halfway around the paved loop trail you can take the unpaved trail through the lava fields and along the base of the mountain. This is a very worthwhile hike and even in packed snow and ice it was fairly easy. Just an eerie feeling being in the lava areas. Then back on the pavement for the rest of the paved loop trail. Also great views of the mountain.

Though you can't hike up into the crater, you can hike around on trails. Walk in and on a lava flow. The other volcanoes and San Francisco peaks are all around. We were there when it was cold, clear, and virtually deserted. The human history here is also interesting and also accessible on the road loop are
ruins. The visitor center staff is friendly. In the warm seasons, there are tours, camping, etc.

The U.S. just isn't known for volcanos, so it is always a little surprising to run into one. What a tortured landscape!! I just found this fascinating.

We stopped here for a quick ~2-3 hour visit on our way to the Grand Canyon via the Watchtower to the Village. This was a day trip out of Flagstaff. This park was the perfect stop for us to get out, stretch the legs, take a short hike, and eat lunch.

After a quick stop at the visitor center to pay our fees, we headed to the lava flow trail. I think it was something like 1/4 mile long, all paved (and plowed!). IT was an easy one for us and it was enjoyable as we were along out there and there was fresh snow on the ground.

About halfway out there is a viewing platform. at this point the baby and wife headed back to the car and the boy and I (he is 5) hit the ~1 mile loop trail that extends into the lava field a bit. This trail was relatively easy and short,. it is not paved and few spots were icy, which made it fun for him. Nothinf like walking in fresh power snow on a beautiful day. By the time we were back to the car, the wife ahd just finidhed getting lunch ready. He chowed down and the road for the Grand Canyon.

Not so fast, though. IN the off-season the bathroom facilities at the trailhead were closed. W ehad to stop at the visitor center to do our business before heading out to the Grand Canyon.

I recommend stopping here if driving through. The fee is modest, includes Wupatki NM, and is good for seven days. Really, just slow down - the Grand Canyon ins't going anywhere. When would you ever have the opportunity to revisit?
