“Spectacular Cinder Cones!”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

This area and the surrounding desert is absolutely breathtaking. The lava flows look like some alien planet out of a sci fi novel. Lots of trails and great nature hikes!

“Not what you expect from your Arizona vacation!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

When travelling from Sedona to the Grand Canyon this a worthwhile detour. Driving the loop from Sunset Crater to Wupatki will take you from the tree filled mountains, through a volcanic lava flow, views of the painted desert, and several ruins of days past that was one of the highlights of our trip. You won't be disappointed you fit this area into your travel schedule, but plan on the 39 mile route taking several hours to stop and check everything out.

“BEAUTIFUL!”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

I have never seen anything like it. Such a beautiful drive. And the kids can earn a Jr. Park Ranger Badge. This is a must see.

“Incredible Lava fields”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

We weren't sure what we were seeing in the distance as we drove that way. Had there been a forest fire recently? Was it strip mining? No, it is the devastation caused by a volcano, and only a 1000 years ago. The lave fields were amazing and the visitor center did a great job of explaining items to both the parents and the kids. This was a very cool stop of the entire family.

“Awesome winter hike!”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

I went in January when it was pretty darn cold (21), but sunny. Some places had 8 inches of snow, but the hike was still very cool. I hiked up to the top of O'Leary's Peak! Very cool, but strenuous. The grade was 11% and pretty snowy at times, but still fun. The view from the top was amazing. I saw all the cinder cones from the top and the view of the San Francisco mountains was to die for. The visitor center was pretty cool and informative also.
