“Very interesting, a mini-St.Helens!”
Reviewed January 30, 2013

There was a major volcanic eruption here in 1064, and the interpretive trail shows you the damage and the lava flow. Unlike St Helens, the vegetation has returned very slowly. The visitor cente also shows the influence of the eruption on the Sinagauas who lived here, and eventually returned.
Unfortunately it is no longer allowed to climb the peak, and you can't see the crater from below.

“the drive alone was worth it . . .”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

The drive between Sunset Crater and Wupatki was beautiful. Sunset has some great areas to view the lava flow, we weren't able to spend enough time because we got there late in the afternoon. However, golden hour was spectacular. Not far from Flagstaff, and a great learning experience also.

“Great scenic tour!”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

Fun and educating circle tour! Amazing views. Enjoyed seeing the fallout of the lava flow, and how close the old pueblos were located in relation to the crater.

“awesome”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

we were there in January and it was very quiet-- the loop drive was worth doing and you should allow 2-3 hours so you can look around and hike at some of the stops--take lots of pictures as the vistas are beautiful.
