The drive up to the site was spectacular. We never saw so much lava so close up. We visited Mt St Helens a while back but the cinder was close up and personal here at Sunset Crater. We stopped the car and walked around in mounds of it as we worked our way to the look-out point. We were not young or nimble enough to make the climb up to the summit but we appreciated it very much anyway.

Got great pics as it was nearing sunset of the crater & the moon. Lava fields look like another planet & are worth the stop on your drive from GCNP to Flagstaff.

Seeing as I live next to Mt. Saint Helen's, Sunset Crater hardly compares. It is a nice perfect cinder cone and the drive gets you around some more with a good overall viewpoint. But it hardly compares to the incredible geology in and aroundFlagstaff or Sedona.

Stopped here on our way from Grand Canyon to Flagstaff. My 13 yr old likes anything to do with science/nature so we thought he would like it and he did. Very interesting to see. We didn't have time to do any hikes. We drove to a few overlooks and did a short walk on a paved trail. Worth the stop.

Fascinating place to visit, when you're close you should really go there.I would not drive 50 miles just to visit, but worth it when you're passing anyway.
