Ive tried breakfast and lunch at criollo. Breakfast was mediocre and lunch was awful. The desert tasted like something made in an easy bake oven

“Creative healthy cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2010

We had a great dinner at this relatively new restaurant that serves local and/or sustainably farmed food at very reasonable prices. The menu was varied and offered flexible choices in terms of vegetarian. meat or fish plates as well as portions (ranging from tapas to regular entrees). We also appreciated the excellent wine list (many interesting Spanish wines) and the choices of wine servings (3 or 6 oz).

The service was very friendly but not quite as professional as it could have been. We shared an appetizer and were served the one plate without being provided with two spoons or two smaller individual plates. Also, as we were very pleased with the food we asked for more information about the chef but no-one seemed to be able to provide any information.

Overall we had a very pleasant experience at Criollo and would definitely eat there again. It's great to know where your food comes from and the prices are very very reasonable.

“I didn't love it but would try again”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2010

We found this place on a quick stop in Flagstaff and wanted to go in immediately. It was very inviting. Our server Jordan was fantastic and very enthusiastic about the food and drink offerings. He was very attentive and entertaining. We were glad to have him because the tables around us seemed to be having some slow service issues with their server. There were some large groups in the restaurant which may have contributed to that problem - they also contributed to the restaurant's noise level being a bit too high. Conversation was a little difficult even though we were seated at the other end of the restaurant.

Unfortunately our meals disappointed us. The tortilla soup was average. I normally love Ropa Vieja but Criollo's was terrible. The presentation was totally unappealing. It looked like a pie graph of shades of brown. The beef was dry and tough and was helped only a little by the tiny portion of tomatoes served with it. I didn't eat the lentils because I am not a fan. The rice was dry also. My companion's Paella was average if a bit bland. The hot chocolate and churros for dessert were the best part of the meal.

The meals around us looked much better than what we got so if I find myself in Flagstaff again I would consider giving Criollo another try.

“You have to try Criollo's Brunch!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2010

We've been going to Criollo since it opened, we love it!! While their lunch and dinner menus are amazing, the brunch is the best in town. I had the blue corn pancakes, best pancakes I've ever had. My Husband had the ancho coffee rubbed steak and eggs, who says steak is just for dinner? I have also had the motulenos, amazing. If you like bloody mary's you must try one, plus their only 5 bucks!

Criollo is a must try, there are so many great things on the menu. The fish tacos are my favorite menu item.

“ok food - bad service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2010

Having lived in Flagstaff for several years I'm always eager to try a new restaurant. We went on a Sunday for their "brunch". The menu looked amazing! Everything looked very appetizing, but the food just didn't come out that tasty. The fish tacos were good but burrito and pork w/ eggs just were not that flavorful. The black beans were tasty but the rice was bland. The menu has so much potential but it just didn't deliver.

The main thing that turned us off was the service. The wait staff was snooty and it took 25 minutes for our food to come even though we were the only people in there! They didn't have the ingredients for the one exotic drink we tried to order and the espresso drinks were so so. It was also not kid friendly at all.

This place will probably survive since it's in a good location and will get a lot of tourist traffic. But this local gal just won't bring herself to "eat local" if the service stinks!
