An hour north to the Grand Canyon, an hour south to Sedona and Montezuma National Monument, about a half an hour north to Wupatki National Monument, 15 minutes to Sunset Crater National Monument, 15 minutes south to Walnut Canyon National Monument, 40 minutes west to the lava tubes, 40 minutes west to the ski bowl to start the hike up Mt. Humphreys (the highest mountain in Arizona), 40 minutes east to Meteor Crater, 20 minutes southwest to old downtown Flagstaff. There isn't a better location for jumping off into the wilderness. Literally down the street is a gas station and Highway 89. Less than 10 minutes away are all of the modern conveniences - grocery stores, food chains, Starbucks. The only equal to the location is the graciousness and understanding of the host. Dave gets it. You want to hang out and talk? Dave provides both great conversation and something to drink. You want to get advice on places to go and things to do? Dave knows the area backward and forward and is happy to give you advice. You get back from a long day in the outdoors and you want to have a relaxed night alone? Dave leaves you to it (and leaves you the kitchen to use at your convenience). It's a rare thing to feel as comfortable with someone we've never met as quickly as my girlfriend and I did with Dave. He even made us an awesome breakfast the one morning we didn't leave at 6 in the morning to head out to all of the sights. The house is beautifully decorated, quiet and very comfortable. There's no reason to stay anywhere else in the area - we had a fantastic time and look forward to staying here again!
