“Great location in downtown Flag!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

I usually stay in in budget motels like Motel 6 but felt like staying downtown vs. right by the freeway...

The location of this hotel is AWESOME, right in the heart of downtown Flagstaff. Great food and shopping close by!

I was impressed by the old style decor, trying to keep some of the original vibe of this hotel built in 1927. I enjoyed the cocktail bar and the Rendevouz, both were fun.

Cons: Street noise. Bar noise. Could hear loud people down in the bar until 12am. Maybe not the best choice for families with small children.

That being said... I would definitely stay here again and hope to explore Flagstaff more! :-)

Would be a fun and romantic place for couples <3

Room Tip: I requested a room with a sink and close to the shared bathroom for convenience.

What made me stay at this hotel was the ghost theme. I stayed in a room that a guy in the 80's expired in and he haunts the room. I didnt see any ghosts but staying in the room was cool. The room had old looking furniture in it and the bathroom was small. The hotel itself was located in downtown and next to bars and places to eat. The only thing that I did not like about the hotel was that the club/lounge downstairs was so loud that I could not sleep all night. It was like I was in the club/lounge myself. I didnt get one hour of sleep and left real early that mourning. Would I stay here again??? Only if there was a room that I couldnt hear the bands play all night.

It was a good location, but we didnt like the rooms - too small and tired. Its a theme hotel with the rooms named after actors and singers. Ours was Queen. It had deep purple decor, which made the room dark and dull. Bit tacky for us. The bathroom small with a shower over the bath and curtain. No coffee facilities available in the room.

Parking was a nearby car park and the charge is $17 per night. Not a safe parking zone.

Room Tip: The restaurant was Thai and no other choice available. We ate out and didnt stay for breakfast. Wou...

What we liked about this hotel: its location in Old Town Flagstaff; it's history; its old-time decor, and fixtures.
What we didn't like about this hotel: the street noises that went on most of the night; the tiny bathroom; the small size of the room (we should have asked for a corner room - it would have been bigger); wifi didn't pick up in our room - we had to go downstairs to the lounge to get coverage.
What you should be aware of: there's no food service, but there's a very nice bar and lounge. Also, there are interesting eating options all around the hotel.
Why we liked this hotel despite its drawbacks: It was fun to stay somewhere that didn't feel like hotels everywhere. We really got a sense of the time when Flagstaff was still almost a frontier town. Back then, to have a private bathroom at all was a real luxury. And we liked being able to walk out the door and explore this fascinating town.

A group of women got together and stayed one night at the Hotel Monte Vista to do a little bit of ghost hunting (The hotel is reported to be haunted). We got two rooms, the first room was the Jack Daniels Suite. The Jack Daniels Suite was two bedrooms connected by a bathroom. The best part of this suite is that it faces away from the street so it wasnt very noisy. The beds were very comfortable too. Besides that the hotel needs alot of work. The elevator broke down several times during the day so we had to carry our luggage up three flights of stairs. Second the room was dirty. There was dust everywhere and in places a 1/2 inch thick. There were old airline luggage tickets up on a shelf that had belonged to a previous renter.

I know that this is a old hotel and things wont be perfect. But take some pride in your business. Two of the four light bulbs were missing (not burnt out but missing) repairs in the bathroom were never painted over.

The hotel itself is in a great location, its in downtown so there are alot of shops and good places to eat close by. If you are going just to stay in a haunted hotel, we did have a couple experiences like the sound of paper being moved back and forth and strange smells but if your not going to experience ghost then I would say find another hotel.

One of the advantages of driving Route 66 is that the recommended hotel are all centrally located in the towns and cities as Route 66 went through the centre of towns and so it is with Hotel Monte Vista. It could hardly be more centrally located. But one of the main drawbacks of using historical hotels is that the rooms are much smaller and more basic than modern hotels and so it proved with Monte Vista. We were determined to enjoy as authentic a trip as possible and it suited us. There was a good cocktail bar and many varied restaurants and bars within close walking distance which allowed us to get the vibe of Flagstaff but the hotel is very old-fashioned as far as rooms and facilities are concerned. It is, however, friendly and for those who want to experience the flavour of earlier times to be recommended.

We checked in late on a Friday night to find out we were given the room above the bar where music plays until 12 or 1am. The room was as small as two closets combined which we didn't mind because we wanted to support a small business. This was until we tried to get information about flagstaff twice on saturday. The girls at that the front desk were uninterested in helping us and said they had no idea where we could purchase a keg. Really!?!
The parking is terrible. We drove around for 40 min. and still couldn't find a place to park. Parking does not come with the hotel.
The very unfriendly staff and the less than clean rooms would make me stay at a chain hotel in the future.
As a employee of the hospitality industry I would suggest the following:
If you want to keep a what could be a "cool hotel" alive, hire friendly staff and have a parking spot for your guest.
The only great staff we ran into was at the local coffee shop where the gentleman working was happy to share his local knowledge and friendliness.
