Hotel Monte Vista
Ranked #30 of 66 Hotels in Flagstaff

What we liked about this hotel: its location in Old Town Flagstaff; it's history; its old-time decor, and fixtures.
What we didn't like about this hotel: the street noises that went on most of the night; the tiny bathroom; the small size of the room (we should have asked for a corner room - it would have been bigger); wifi didn't pick up in our room - we had to go downstairs to the lounge to get coverage.
What you should be aware of: there's no food service, but there's a very nice bar and lounge. Also, there are interesting eating options all around the hotel.
Why we liked this hotel despite its drawbacks: It was fun to stay somewhere that didn't feel like hotels everywhere. We really got a sense of the time when Flagstaff was still almost a frontier town. Back then, to have a private bathroom at all was a real luxury. And we liked being able to walk out the door and explore this fascinating town.

A group of women got together and stayed one night at the Hotel Monte Vista to do a little bit of ghost hunting (The hotel is reported to be haunted). We got two rooms, the first room was the Jack Daniels Suite. The Jack Daniels Suite was two bedrooms connected by a bathroom. The best part of this suite is that it faces away from the street so it wasnt very noisy. The beds were very comfortable too. Besides that the hotel needs alot of work. The elevator broke down several times during the day so we had to carry our luggage up three flights of stairs. Second the room was dirty. There was dust everywhere and in places a 1/2 inch thick. There were old airline luggage tickets up on a shelf that had belonged to a previous renter.

I know that this is a old hotel and things wont be perfect. But take some pride in your business. Two of the four light bulbs were missing (not burnt out but missing) repairs in the bathroom were never painted over.

The hotel itself is in a great location, its in downtown so there are alot of shops and good places to eat close by. If you are going just to stay in a haunted hotel, we did have a couple experiences like the sound of paper being moved back and forth and strange smells but if your not going to experience ghost then I would say find another hotel.

One of the advantages of driving Route 66 is that the recommended hotel are all centrally located in the towns and cities as Route 66 went through the centre of towns and so it is with Hotel Monte Vista. It could hardly be more centrally located. But one of the main drawbacks of using historical hotels is that the rooms are much smaller and more basic than modern hotels and so it proved with Monte Vista. We were determined to enjoy as authentic a trip as possible and it suited us. There was a good cocktail bar and many varied restaurants and bars within close walking distance which allowed us to get the vibe of Flagstaff but the hotel is very old-fashioned as far as rooms and facilities are concerned. It is, however, friendly and for those who want to experience the flavour of earlier times to be recommended.

We checked in late on a Friday night to find out we were given the room above the bar where music plays until 12 or 1am. The room was as small as two closets combined which we didn't mind because we wanted to support a small business. This was until we tried to get information about flagstaff twice on saturday. The girls at that the front desk were uninterested in helping us and said they had no idea where we could purchase a keg. Really!?!
The parking is terrible. We drove around for 40 min. and still couldn't find a place to park. Parking does not come with the hotel.
The very unfriendly staff and the less than clean rooms would make me stay at a chain hotel in the future.
As a employee of the hospitality industry I would suggest the following:
If you want to keep a what could be a "cool hotel" alive, hire friendly staff and have a parking spot for your guest.
The only great staff we ran into was at the local coffee shop where the gentleman working was happy to share his local knowledge and friendliness.

The hotel is very overpriced.
Pros:
It's got history
It's clean
It's has a cocktail bar

Cons
It is so basic it doesnt even have proper curtains!! Just thin voil so at 6am the room is super bright & I couldn't sleep.
The shower toilet cubicle is tiny.
In The room there is only a bed & a tv. No coffee or bed side table even.
It's noisy- because its above 2 bars. So difficult to get to sleep.
Very limited parking available and there are mot a lot of options for parking near by.
Breakfast is not included, which given the cost it should be as you don't get much else for your money.
Save your money we have stayed in much better motels for a third of the cost. Give this one a miss.

We stayed overnight here 29/05/2013 on our Route 66 trip..
We paid $101:31 no breakfast included.

The location for this hotel is spot on .. Very central... Room was very basic, bathroom tiny, but hey we only wanted a room to sleep and somewhere to freshen up..so not a problem .. Would have been nice to have a kettle or some kind of coffee making facilities, however you could get coffee etc down stairs for a very reasonable price..
Unlike most USA hotels we didn't have an ironing board or iron which for us was a problem as we were travelling on a motorbike so clothes were a tad creased...lol..
WiFi was good too which again as we were travelling this was of importance to us..
We were recommended this hotel due to a friend previously stayed here, it had character and was a bit like going back in time.. And flagstaff .. Well its just like the movies... A must for every traveller..

So it has some history and it has some ghosts neither of which is a good excuse for charging $100 for a tiny tiny room with and soggy uncomfortable mattress and a bathroom that was frankly inadequate. Plus we had the added thrill of the noise of the hotels air conditioning system chugging away all night!

Its ok but over-priced - do yourself a favour go for the Super 8 and stroll into ton for the Tuesday night happy hour $2.50 a beer in the bar.

Room Tip: Try the Super 8!
