“I struggled with this rating - A Lot. 5 stars or 4, Please Read.”
Reviewed July 23, 2014

I know, I don't usually suggest five stars if there are any issues. I went back and forth between four and five stars for a LONG time, but had to suggest four. Understand, this is a great location and I would definitely stay here again. It just was not up to a perfect rating.

The Great things about this location: Richard is a fabulous proprietor. He is friendly and accommodating. He and Baxter, the house dog were waiting for us upon arrival, and eagerly showed my wife and I the property. He took a lot of pride in the property, and was currently painting areas which were accessible.

The residence itself is quite quaint, and the rooms are comfortable. We had the Lily room with its attached balcony, although to be honest we could not take advantage of the balcony on this trip. Others have written that this is a quiet room but I again have to be honest and tell you that it was not so quiet. There is a school next door, so during the day it was impossible to nap or read quietly due to the noise of happy children playing and stern teachers trying to herd cats. Certainly not the fault of the proprietors, more of a circumstance of location. The barking dog another night would have been gladly exchanged for the occasional car or truck going down the street.

The room itself was well appointed and clean, and the bed was extremely comfortable. The only concern with the room was that we were told be Richard that the mixing valve on the tub had a crack and as such we needed to turn the supply valves on and off before getting in. I hate to be picky, but this is an item that should have been repaired as soon as was practicable after learning of it and it simply was not. We don't know when the issue arose but we were told about it in such a casual manner that I have to believe that it has exited for a while.

There is also no air conditioning, which was no big deal, but nor was there a ceiling fan. I understand that the furnishings were period correct and antiques, but a ceiling fan would have been nice. The small oscillating fan that was left on the floor was not what we would have expected and barely did the job. The second night we simply left it off and kept the windows open (which was reason that the neighbor's barking dog became such an issue).

We had somewhat of an issue being that a tour company (we were playing tourist) was going to pick us up the next morning at 7:30 so a full breakfast was not going to be possible. He assured us that he would prepare and leave a yogurt and fruit breakfast for us in the refrigerator and would have coffee waiting, but then said that he would prepare at least the fruit and yogurt portion of what our "normal" breakfasts would be. We were met with hot coffee and a bowl of diced fruit and yogurt with honey which was greatly appreciated if not a little on the sweet side.e had somewhat of an issue being that a tour company (we were playing tourist) was going to pick us up the next morning at 7:30 so a full breakfast was not going to be possible. We were met with hot coffee and a bowl of diced fruit and yogurt with honey which was greatly appreciated if not a little on the sweet side.

The second day we were able to take advantage of the breakfast offered. We were disappointed for several reasons, but please understand, Richard seems to be a great chef. We were disappointed as the day before we were not able to take advantage of breakfast. Not his fault. The second morning he was going to make the signature French Toast which we were really looking forward to, but one of the other guests was apparently Diabetic. As a result, he made a dish of eggs and cheese, reminiscent of a soufflé, that was, well, OK. As opposed to accommodating that guest, he changed the menu for us all. We did have yogurt and fruit, but then came the soufflé. Even more of a strada would have been appreciated given the reputation.

I admit, I may be a little hard on this property. However, knowing that we were not able to take advantage of the breakfast part of the package one day, and then changing the whole menu to accommodate one guest was not what we would have expected especially when we were there two nights. The other guests were not repeat customers and were there one night. I am not saying not to accommodate, but more of a balance and an accommodating for us would have been nice.

For those desiring to stay here, I would suggest that you do so with your eyes open. Definitely stay here, as it is a nice property and Richard is a nice host. It's close to the freeway exit (not so close as you hear it, but close enough that you don't have to drive for miles to get here once getting off the Freeway). It's also close enough to downtown that you are not put out, yet you don't hear the bar noise. Also, make certain that you tell Richard that you want that French Toast so you don't miss out like we did.

Room Tip: Make certain to tell Richard that you want the French Toast! The Lily Room has a private balcony, bu...

Richard greeted us with open arms and gave us the grand tour. This B&B was built to look like a Victorian home so it has all of the wonderful decor and authentic pieces of the period. The bathroom was huge and beautifully decorated but the breakfast was a masterpiece! Thanks for the great experience.

Each room has it,s own character , very nice bathroom with a beautiful old antique tub and a shower.Very nice neighborhood , just minutes from downtown flagstaff. Parking ,wi fi and a nice porch. Richard was very helpful. As for breakfast, it was unique, you can have it anytime in the morning if you want to leave early ,just ask Richard. You feel you are at home and not in an inn.
Thank you Richard for your hospitality

Room Tip: You feel downtown, but you are in residential neighborhood. Close to Route 66!!

Needed to get away from the scorching heat of the desert and where did I go? Where else but to a nice nice little getaway in the cool pines of Flagstaff, AZ where everyone should go! Starlight Pine B&B, of course. Stayed a couple of nights and had a wonderful time. Slept in the Peacock Room this time around where it felt light I was sleeping in the past with its historic decor of the early to mid-1900s. Bedroom accommodating enough for a family of four. Quiet enough to lull you into a restful slumber only to be awaken by an early morning sunrise and an occasional chirping of a couple of local birds. There is nothing like the great smell of a good pot of coffee brewing and a great breakfast to start your day off right. There is no corporate feel like you normally get in a hotel with a continental breakfast but a complimentary sit down served breakfast that is fit for nobility. There is also that international feel around the breakfast table when you get to meet and socialize with fellow wanders from as far away as Europe and from those who are from the Pacific Rim.

Richard continues to amaze me with his gifts and talents of hospitality and customer services professionally and yet still makes one feel like they are home personally. All in all it is my choice and it should be everyone's choice for a home away from home if travelling through the southwest. Its worth it and you'll not have regrets. My hats off to you Richard and keep up that wonderful work.

Aloha & mahalo nui loa, jt

I had the opportunity to stay at the Starlight Pines this past weekend. The bed was amazingly comfortable. I stayed in the "Peacock Room". The decor of the house is done in the turn of the 20th century and the Peacock Room has beautiful stained glass light fixtures and a huge bathroom with an antique tub fit for royalty. It all makes you feel like you have stepped into the past but with all the modern amenities of today. The morning greets you with light filtered through the pine trees. Down stairs in the dining room, the coffee is on and Richard prepares a delightful morning meal. We were treated to a bowl of fresh fruit topped with whipped cream for our first course and delicious french toast for our main course. The atmosphere is homey and comforting. I will definitely be staying there again. Loved it.

Room Tip: All the rooms are decorated differently. Each has their own theme. I am looking forward to staying i...

My wife and I stayed for 3 days and were very impressed with the whole experience. Richard and Michael (and Baxter) are terrific hosts and the house itself is beautiful. We stayed in the Lily room, with a private balcony giving us a marvelous view of the mountains to the north. The room was very nicely put together and had it's own private bathroom. I think, but I am not sure, that they all do...

The breakfast part of the B&B was a very new thing to us and we truly enjoyed the effort that was put into putting together the elegant and tasty start to our days. If you happen to be there on a french toast day, I think you should consider yourself very luck indeed :)

If you are staying in Flagstaff, Starlight Pines should be on the top of your wishlist for sure.
