“Amazing site - glad we stopped”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

In a recent trip to Flagstaff, we decided to stop at Wupatki on the way home. What I didn't realize at first was that Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki are connected. We did the Sunset Crater national monument first and it was ok. I wasn't sure what to expect from Wupatki National Monument, but when we came upon the first ruin, we were amazed. There are four to five sites to visit. The large one we came upon first was open to climb up through. There is a slight walk from the parking area and would be challenging for anyone with difficulty walking.

The visitor center is very good and we enjoyed reading about all the different elements of the ruins. Be sure to stop in the Visitor's center first. We did not and went right to the ruin behind it. At the visitor's center you can get a booklet that tells you what each of the numbered exhibits are when you're walking around the ruin. We ended up buying one to take with us (you can borrow one for free or buy one for $1). It answered a lot of our questions. Our children 13 and 15 were fascinated with it all. Definitely a great place to stop.

“So glad we stopped”

This place was way better than expected & we spent a lot of time here. You can get right up to the ruin. The kids loved this 'blow hole' that is a hold in the ground linked to a huge crack in the earth's crust & cool air is blowing out & has been since the indians were there.

“Well worth the trip!”

This is worth the drive out of town takes about 1hr to get there, but there are several small ruins before you get to Wupatki National Monument, once there you can walk right down and around the ruins.

“Best pueblo site in Arizona”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2013

Wupatki was very impressive and well worth the side trip. There are a number of interesting structures and the on-hand guides (some volunteers) are very good and eager to share their knowledge. The setting also makes the park special. Beautiful scenery in wide-open space.

“loved this...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2013

There are different pueblo remains throughout Arizona. I was most entranced by these because of their location and because they are built on top of huge rocks instead of into the cliff areas (like Walnut Canyon and Montezuma's Well). Plus, the day I visited there were few people and the silence was so deep and profound.. it was a wonderful place to just sit and be present to the beauty of the area and the San Francisco peaks towering in the background.
