Don't be scared off by the reviews that talk about the steps. They are well maintained concrete steps with hand railings. Just take your time and you will be fine. Canyon is very scenic and has many cliff dwellings...not large multistory abodes like some cliff structures because these are fitted underneath sculpted sandstone overhangs. Heard there were more than 300 within the area. Trail goes around a peninsula type land form that they are calling an island. You walk past multiroom one story structures and see many others on the opposite of the gorge.

Minimal entrance fee. Picturesque canyon with many old cliff dwellings. Not the big kind you see more to the south but houses made in rows under layers of overhanging rock. See pics. There is a rim trail (which we did not take) that would be better for the stair challenged. We took the Island Loop trail which begins and ends with 240 steps and more steps as you circle around an island/peninsula of rock in the canyon. This trail gives you views to all parts of the canyon and the cliff dwellings around the island and on the canyon walls. Trail is well maintained but there are MANY steps. Plan accordingly.

Another great site near Flagstaff and I would recommend to anyone who can climb down and back up the steps. My 3 year old did it, so its not that bad really. There are plenty of benches to rest on too, just bring some water.

Great visit to Walnut Canyon. Made it down all 240+ steps with interesting things to see along the way. Cliffside dwellings interesting. Need to be in shape to make this climb down and back and wear good shoes or sneakers. There are benches along the way to rest. If you have the senior pass for National Parks it works here also.

Walnut Canyon NM is a well designed and maintained travel site in Arizona, including a good visitor's centre and store, an exhilarating hike down into the canyon (240 steps) on a well maintained and marked trail. The best feature is being able to walk through pueblo ruins and imagine how they must have looked originally thanks to beautifully illustrated sign boards. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit there. Note: I understand that maintenance will take place on the trail this summer so it may be good to call before visiting to make sure everything is open.
