Oaklands tells the story of the Maney family and of the Civil War. Well worth a visit.

Oaklands lies a bit under the radar, in a residential neighborhood near downtown Murfreesboro. The entire attraction is the antebellum home, a mixture of Federal and Italianate architecture owned by the Maney family, about whom you learn little during the tour. The interpretation focuses almost exclusively on the furniture and the uses to which the rooms were put, which is standard stuff for privately-run house museums. The staff is friendly, there is a small gift shop and a film that precedes your visit. If you like 19th-century homes, you'll enjoy this unusual dwelling.

Given the history surrounding this home, the tour could be so much more than it is. I was disappointed.

My friends and I toured Oaklands mansion today and really enjoyed it! We started off with a short 15 minute video at the visitor center next door to the historic home. Our tour of the mansion was fantastic!! It is clear that our tour guide loves not only the history of the home but of the entire area. She was very professional, personable and informative. Oaklands mansion has quite a collection of pieces that date back to the family and the rest are all authentic period pieces. Only the floor coverings and wallpaper was reproduction with the exception of one room that had period wall to wall carpeting. This home is true to the period and truly worth a look! They also featured additional exhibits in a large room off the gift shop all of which is included in the very reasonable admission price. If you love history do not miss Oaklands. It is truly a historic gem!!

A fascinating home with an even more fascinating history. Our guide was excellent and knew all about the home and the owners. It was evident he enjoyed his job and even took my wife and I down to the nearby spring afterward and filled us in on a lot more of the family history. Maybe not the nicest or most interesting home we've visited, but still worthwhile and an interesting piece of civil war history.
