Owner description: The tour will take you 300 feet below the earth into the pitch blackness old-time miners, some as young as seven or eight, had to face. While you won’t have to deal with poisonous gases, you will feel the chill. The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour is open from April 1st through November 30th and is closed only on Thanksgiving Day.

Well worth the stop! Three of us (2 adults & 9 yr old) had a great time. Extremely knowledgable guide was able to answer all questions and keep everyone interested. It's cool but not at all uncomfortable. Wear the hard hat if you're over 6 feet! There's a video in the gift shop that you can watch for some backgroud. A little long but it's interesting. Usual ticky-tacky stuff in the gift shop. Tip#1: When going down to the mine, try to get the last car & row; i.e. in the car closest to the mine entrance. Gives you a good view if you're filming.
When coming up - try to get in the first row of the first car. Tip#2: Get there early and take the first or second tour. The wait can get a little long if there's a crowd.

Second best tour in Scranton (after Steamtown) and a real eye opener for kids of all ages. You ride at a steep incline into a coal mine, then walk about a half-mile seeing exhibits. Its cool down there, so wear the jackets they offer. Its a bit scarey for kids, but highly educational as well. Look for two-fer coupons at the Pa. Welcome Ctr on I-84 when you enter the state.

Fascinating experience! Tram ride into mine as well as foot tour thereafter are quite entertaining as well as educational. Young and old will leave with a true appreciation of what these men and boys went through and what dangers still exist today. Museum tour (lead by Fred) comes alive with local stories and facts behind the exhibits. The amount of questions gernerated by all ages (especially the young) is a testimate to just how intereting this place is. Tall folks - heed advise to wear the hard-hats provided and wear a jacket!
