We have been to Steamtown many times and have participated in several excursions. Our latest experience was the special Scranton to Tobyhanna trip which was pulled by two immaculate loaner 1948 vintage F3 diesels.

The volunteer in our car, Tom, I believe, provided a non-stop historical narrative on the outbound leg of the trip. While in Tobyhanna, we took a guided tour of a small ice house operation that pays homage to the giant ice harvesting events that used to take place in Tobyhanna preceding the invention of mechanical refrigeration.

Upon our return to Scranton, we did a tour of the museum areas and visited the stored steam engines in the roundhouse. We also witnessed each of the F3 diesels take a trip on the turntable so that they could be stored in one of the roundhouse stalls. A perfect ending to a great fall day.

We happened to arrive on a day when there was no charge for admission. There was, however, a $5 fee to ride the train, which I was good with. In the mean time, our traveling companion jumped at the chance to pay $35 and ride in the engine!

His tail is probably still wagging.

The museum is really well laid out and PACKED with info. There's a cit away of an engine, and a box car to feel all hobo like. After our ride we were informed that we had a few minutes to wait before the engine we had just used was coming into the wheel house for a demo. Well! Lemme tell you, it was 10 minutes of watching a truly awesome engine slowly turning 360 degrees. It really was train porn.

What a treasure this NHS is. Kids will love all the big and little engines and adults will be informed about the history of railroads.

Steamtown is a large rail yard and museum that has been open about 15+ years that features the history of railroading in America. The museum is very informative and worth the price of admission. The rail yards and the roundhouse are working railroads facilities that the park service conducts tours. All the park service personnel are very helpful, friendly and knowledgable. A must-do is the train excursions that run through the countryside and into Gouldsboro and Tobyhanna. The best time of year for the excursion is during fall foliage season.
