“Safe Haven in a Storm”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

This hotel is close to where I work and show dogs. During Sandy, the roads were closed during the day and I couldn't get home. I made a reservation here (not the first time for a storm either) and was glad to be able to park my car out of the wind and safely above water. Many pet owners from CT were also present. It is getting harder and harder to find pet friendly hotels. One couple had their dogs, who could not be left alone in the room because of separation anxiety. The staff (few were on duty so I think room service was not available)served them their dinner in the lobby area outside the restaurant most graciously. This is above and beyond what most places would do. I also met a Great Dane and Husky from the CT shoreline. It almost looked like the Thanksgiving Cluster had come early. Thanks to all of the staff for understanding the needs of pet owners and allowing them a safe haven during this storm. Yes, there will be pet fees, parking charges and taxes. However, I am thankful that there is a place that can handle the ups and downs throw at it with understanding and thoughtfulness.

Locked in a room on a Friday night from Priceline at a $56 rate; solid deal as I wanted to be within walking distance of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. While it was an exceptional price for being in downtown Springfield, what I didn't anticipate was additional charges of $13/night for the overnight parking and $10/night for WiFi access. I can understand charging for parking as parking is limited in downtown but charging for WiFi access always irritates me. One of my first time staying at a Sheraton in recent memory and it was a great overall experience with high quality rooms. In the parking garage, there were local kids bicycling around and loitering so I was a little worried about the safety of my vehicle but luckily nothing happened.

I attended a two day conference at this property. The rooms were clean and adequate, although the property is a little dated. Being an atrium hotel, the noise level outside the door can be a problem from time to time since there was a kids event here when I checked in.

The meeting spaces were fine for the series of meetings I attended. The best part of this stay was the food, however. Usually conference food is atrocious. The food at this event was really good for all four meals plus one reception at the event. It was a big surprise.

This would be a good property for a medium size meeting in this area.

Stayed at the Sheraton again. They have upgrade some of the rooms which are very nice. Additionally, the front desk staff and the cleaning people have really done a good job at the attention to detail.

Room Tip: Choose room 1236. It has a fireplace in it.

We stayed for two nights and found the hotel to be spacious, clean and comfortable. The atrium design is appealing and the rooms were modern, although a little worn in places. We had a club level room, which meant that breakfast was included - this was a bonus, as was the fridge full of complimentary soft drinks and water which you could help yourself to at any time. We were caught out by the evening drinks and snacks though - we had assumed alcoholic drinks were also complimentary, but discovered to our cost that they were not! No price list was displayed, and I did feel that this was misleading.

There is a large swimming pool, hot tub and sauna and there is a sports bar where you can get the usual bar food. The quality of the food was excellent, and the portions were very generous. My only complaint is that the bar itself was a bit down at heel, and not very welcoming, although the bar tender did do his best to make me feel at home.

The hotel is not located in a particularly wonderful area - lots of homeless people seem to congregate nearby, and the whole area closes down on Sundays, giving it a rather dissolute appearance.

Would I stay here again? Yes, if I was passing through Springfield and wanted somewhere clean, comfortable and convenient.

Room Tip: I definitely recommend the club level rooms.

I am an SPG Platinum member. I stay at Starwood properties at least 50 nights per year and have stayed in at least 100 Sheraton properties in North America. The Sheraton Monarch is easily the worst Sheraton property I have ever stayed in. If you look on the Starwood website you will see that this hotel is rated as a category 2 property (which is usually appointed to Four Points properties). This should be a big warning sign. The property itself has a very nice layout, a large atrium property. However, the rooms are dated beyond belief. Furniture and carpets are torn, stained and frayed. TV's in most rooms are not even flat screens.

As A platinum member I am usually upgraded to a suite and even their suites are in terrible shape. The service is spotty. Parking is a nightmare, as there is a very small lot below the hotel that is full 50% of the time. When this happens you have to park in a lot across the street under I-91. From this lot it is a very long walk to get to the front desk, especially if you are carrying bags.

There is often a seedy element hanging around the lobby. There is a sports bar on the property that has some of the worst bar food I have ever eaten.

My advice is the following. Avoid this property! Stay at the Sheraton at Bradley Airport. It is 15 minutes south of Springfield and that property is 100% better and is about the same price.

Room Tip: Half the rooms are right on I-91. try to get a quiter room on the other side of the hotel and on a h...

When I arrived at the desk to check in the clerk seemed very flustered and was beyond rude. I felt like i was being brushed off and just thrown out like another number. The restaurant staff are decent. I came to the front desk Tuesday night and asked about local restaurants, Again the blonde was extremely rude and did not seem like she wanted to be there whatsoever.

The beds are very comfortable.
The hotel is atrium style so you hear everything all the way from the bottom to the top.

If you have a choice of hotel, this should not be your first pick.
