Downtown Springfield isn't exactly the most happenin' venue in the East, but this energetic restaurant on a side street is where the action is. The night I went, it seemed to be the only business open in the entire downtown, but it was packed, noisy, and great fun. The largest collection of beer steins you'll ever see, tiered on high walls, greets you when you enter the bar. In the adjoining dining room, German-costumed waitresses are delivering steins of the house Oktoberfest brew and heaping platters of sausage, sauerbraten, wiener schnitzel, braised veal or lamb shanks, and less ethnic steaks and seafood. Good, hearty, satisfying fare. Tempting sides, including delicious red cabbage and German potato salad. Perfect apple strudel for dessert. Prices are reasonable considering the quality of the food and the happy atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.
