“This place will make you "Sicka"”
Reviewed September 19, 2009

I am not a high maintenance gal in regards to hotels. In fact, I have traveled to several third-world countries and been completely happy with my "hostel" stays. However, this hotel was awful. The BF and I arrived around 10:00 P.M. after a brief flight from Anchorage and Juneau. After Matt asked for a room "not across from an elevator," guess where we ended up on the 4th floor?!

Furthermore, the king beds are NOT actually king beds: They are two fulls pushed together! Really?! Really!! My BF asked to confirm this craziness.

Lastly, and the ultimate reason we could no longer stay there, our room smelled of mildew. I assume this is a health code violation and should most likely be looked into... It stunk even outside the room! Not only did it reek of mildew, there was some serious mold action in there that made us cough. After asking to be switched to another room, we were told we would be put on a list. the next morning.

Many collegues stayed here and complained about a couple of the front desk attendents being rude also.

All in all, this is the worse hotel I have ever encountered, regardless of the fact it has a decent restaurant/ bar and decorations.

The location of this hotel is very central, and a room on the south side yields beautiful views of the harbor and mountains. The staff are all very friendly. However, they also seem very young, confused and challenged to provide even mediocre service. No one in the hotel seems to know where the switch is to turn on the fireplace in the sitting room downstairs, though I've seen it on. The phone in the lobby and all the computers are out of service. The phone cord and much of the room is really grimy. The windows are poorly insulated, and the noise from the street and other rooms is noticeable. The restaurant has very high prices, and very average food. It's ok for a business trip. Do check out the hidden Highliner Coffee Shop, behind the Subway across the street. Nice treat."

The hotel rooms are showing wear and need a remodel. Restful sleep is difficult given the noise from other rooms. The restaurant serves pricy and below average food, while the service is terrible.

I have stayed at this hotel 6 times and I am consistently disappointed. The Totem Sq hotel is much better.

Check in was smooth and the room was clean. Didn't notice the fan until the next morning. Wish the front desk staff had mentioned it. Was somewhat stuffy most of the night, and when we opened the window , the traffic right outside was kind of noisy.

Good internet connection in th elobby.

Sitka was a pleasant surprise- beautifully set on the water, clean as clean could be and even a bit of sophistication. The Westmark is in the same league as Hampton Inn and a quarter notch below Holiday Inn. From walking past the Sitka competition, I'd wager it's the best hotel in town. My room and bathroom were both recently renovated- clean, functional, and tasteful- if not luxurious, trendy and chic. The hotel has killer views. The restaurant was better than OK and every employee was friendly and helpful.

This was my experience:

1. Booking - easy; centralized; good rental car package deal, which I took. Nice big leather-seated car.

2. Room - sweeping views of Sitka Harbor and Sound. relatively high up. Clean. Quiet. Looks like recent remodeling or well maintained, at least my room was.

3. Restaurant - good food and portions (filet mignon, especially).

4. Location - downtown, walking distance to everything. flyfishing shop below the hotel; no kidding.

5. Parking - a little tight, some gravel lots, but sufficient.

In my experience, this westmark is well above average for hotels in small Alaskan cities. This means not overly luxurious and large, but very pleasant experience with no issues.

The WestMark was right on the water and near the boats, Bars, Shops and food. The Pour House is a Non smoking bar with a ton of history and then theres the Pioneer, which is a smoking bar with tons of history. Check out the boat and fish photos. The West Mark offers a free Continental breafkfast, get there by 8:00am or you'll miss out . The Coffee and baggels were fresh.
They had Milk and cereal too. The rooms at the West mark now called the Toten Inn (see the totem pole near the hotel) had good beds, hot showers and WIFI Access in our room. They have a free work station in the lobby that seem to have a customer everytime i walked by it. Plenty of cable TV stations also. Bathrooms were clean and stocked with clean towels.
We asked for extra pillows and they took like 2 minutes and they were knocking on the door to deliver them. The staff were proffestional and courteous for the most part. We enjoyed our visit and would return.

  • Liked — Boat ramp was in front of the hotel!
  • Disliked — No Breakfast after 8:00 AM
  • Tips/Secrets — Bring your Notebook For WIFI Access.
