I couldn't get a reservation at the popular and small main restaurant, but had a delicious chowder and salmon sandwich at Ludwig's outpost near the Science Center. Really outstanding!

My wife and I recently spent a day in Sitka before we embarked upon the cruise of our lives. We had planned to eat at our hotel until a local merchant told us about Ludwig's Bistro. The merchant made a reservation for us, and recommended the white salmon and black cod collars. Honestly, once we were seated we could not tell if we were in Alaska or in the finest bistro in Spain. The white salmon was unavailable the night we dined, but we can attest the Black Cod and Halibut dinners were among the best we have ever eaten. Complimented by a nice Spanish wine and outstanding service, our evening was perfect.

We absolutely loved this place. Make sure to make a reservation a few days ahead of time, as it is very small. Our group of four got a reservation and were seated at the bar. Wine list and beer list were great. We shared a cup of chowder to taste it as it is one of their specialties, which we enjoyed. I had the Katlian special and would highly recommend this to everyone! So good, wish I would have went back and had it a second time. We all enjoyed our dishes, and our waitress was superb! It was the best service we had in Sitka! Spendy but worth it!

We did not actually eat in the bistro, but we purchased a cup of chowder in the building beside the Science Center. It was Ludwig's Chowder made with chorizo sausage and lots of clams. It was served with a slice of bread and it was out of this world! If you are in Sitka, do not leave without sampling the clam chowder. It was beyond expectation. We sat outside at a picnic table and watched the salmon jumping and also being caught by a huge sea lion. A great Alaskan memory.
