“Competes with top restaurants in big cities”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2011

It doesn't really get any better than the food here. Fresh, seasonal fare - mostly seafood of course. The best salmon I've ever tasted. The one negative is that the risotto was just OK. Great calamari starter. Husband loved the oysters and paella. Finished off the whole serving, which was generous. Even the bread was good. Delicious chocolate something or other for dessert. Sadly, was pregnant so couldn't sample the wine selection. Husband had a beer from a local brewery that he was very happy with, and he is a definite beer snob.

Very intimate small town feel - very mediterranean, which I assume is the point. Make a reservation, we called the day of on a Wednesday and 5:30 was the best we could get. Several people walked in and were turned away while we ate.

If you consider yourself a foodie or just like nice restaurants, don't miss this one on a trip to Sitka. Its not cheap, but you get what you pay for in this instance.

“Wonderful spot!”

The food was fabulous, the service terrific. Just make sure to make reservations because this is a very tiny spot and people love it.

“Best Restaurant in town - Not Big City Though, but Close!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2010

Tiny restaurant in out of the way place named after the owner's dog! A very dark place and very tiny. We were going to see if another person could join us and they couldn't make it a 3 as no room between tables to place another chair. Fair enough!~ Waitress was very nice lady and service was timely and excellent.

Don't usually do bread but they had two kinds; both homemade and delicious. Butter was great as well.

Had glasses of Spanish Rioja. Wine was good. Nice wine list went well with the food featured in the restaurant.

Smoked salmond chowder was tasty but 1 tiny piece of fish in it. It was thick, creamy and tasted great but no real fish in it. lots of potatoes in it. Was good but needed more fish in it.

We ordered a starter of scallps wrapped in bacon. Bacon was nothing special and nothing to rave about. Would have preferred the scallops solo as they were sweet, very fresh and delicious OR if they used Mangalitsa pork which has huge amounts of flavor. This bacon was generic and tasted okay but nothing special. However the bacon was NOT salty which was good! so obviously a decent quality of bacon was used.

One main course we had was the White King Salmon in red pepper cream sauce. i thought was delicious. Frankly the white king salmon doesn't really even need a fancy sauce. It is delicious on its own. The sauce was good but a bit overpowered the fish. Just eat the fish without the sauce or use it sparingly.

Paella done with house made chorizo, scallops, shrimp, calamari, red and green peppers, red onions and saffron arborio. Hardly tasted the saffron though. I'm allergic to chicken so happy they use fish stock as the base and no chicken in it. Very tasty and huge portion; took 2/3 of it home with me. would order it again. tasted even more flavorful the next day.

Dessert flourless chocolate tart (tasted like dark chocolate browning icing) was very very good and flavorable. They could have served it with less berry sauce but that was delicious as well. Freshly made whipped cream.

Their coffee was great.

I am picky about tap water served in restaurants. They NEED a filter as Sitka florinates the water. It is a shame as they have the most fabulous water at a public Artesian well on the outskirts of town. I got empty water jugs and got a ride there and drank that delicious water. Ludwig's needs to use a filter on the tap water OR get their water at the Artesian well. Would make a big difference.

would recommend Ludwig's and I believe it IS the best restaurant in town!

“One of the 2 finest restaurants we visited in Alaska”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2010

Ludvig's Bistro is unimpressive from the outside, but serves fantastic food, the best in Sitka. It is small, intimate, so make a reservation. Expensive, but sharing is expected. The cuisine and decor is Mediterranian - excellent chef. This is for your special meal in Sitka and is not to be missed before leaving the island.

“Cioppino was less than terrific”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2010

I was at Ludwig's Bistro last week, ordering the Cioppino. I thought the dish was poor at best. The sauce was too thick and too heavily tomato for the fish ingredients, which were non-standard - salmon and scallops. The scallops were over-cooked and both, especially the scallops were completely overwhelmed by the heavy tomato paste like sauce.

At $35 this dish was over-priced and poorly executed. I would have returned it to the kitchen, but we were pressed for time with a plane schedule.

As my first visit to Ludwig's - I cannot afford to go again for such a disappointing meal.
