Owner description: Growing from a backyard, volunteer-run operation, the Alaska Raptor Center has become Alaska's foremost bald eagle hospital and educational center, as well as one of the state's premier visitor attractions. Each year, the Alaska Raptor Center provides medical treatment to 100-200 injured bald eagles and other birds. Our goal is to release our patients back into the wild; some, however, are injured so severely they could not survive in the wild even after rehabilitation. These birds may join our Raptors-in-Residence, providing excitement and education for more than 36,000 annual visitors and for the 15,000 schoolchildren we reach through the Adopt-A-Raptor program and Classroom Presentations around the country. The Alaska Raptor Center's 17-acre campus borders the Tongass National Forest, a temperate coastal rainforest, and the Indian River in Sitka, Alaska, and features award-winning natural habitats for our 19 Raptors-in-Residence.

Seeing the owls and eagles up close was great. There's also a boardwalk trail from here that's awesome

The staff were enthusiastic and genuinely engaged with the care of their birds! We enjoyed the outdoor, permanent residents.

We really enjoyed the centre and learning the work they do.
You don't need long, maybe an hour at the centre - it's very interesting and seeing so many birds being rehabilitated so they can go back to the wild is great.
You don't need transport - we walked through town to the totem park and then through the forest, which took about 30 mins, then across the road, the same time frame back.

Although there is no shortage of eagles in and around Sitka, we found our visit here to be very informative. When done, do take the trail behind the facility to watch the salmon spawning on Indian River; it's more "up close and personal" than the bridge overlook in the historic park.

The center is phenomenal, and the guide was perfect. He took us on a tour of the center, introduced us to the different raptors, told us why they were at the center, and completely loved his job.
