Owner description: Growing from a backyard, volunteer-run operation, the Alaska Raptor Center has become Alaska's foremost bald eagle hospital and educational center, as well as one of the state's premier visitor attractions. Each year, the Alaska Raptor Center provides medical treatment to 100-200 injured bald eagles and other birds. Our goal is to release our patients back into the wild; some, however, are injured so severely they could not survive in the wild even after rehabilitation. These birds may join our Raptors-in-Residence, providing excitement and education for more than 36,000 annual visitors and for the 15,000 schoolchildren we reach through the Adopt-A-Raptor program and Classroom Presentations around the country. The Alaska Raptor Center's 17-acre campus borders the Tongass National Forest, a temperate coastal rainforest, and the Indian River in Sitka, Alaska, and features award-winning natural habitats for our 19 Raptors-in-Residence.

We took a tour, beautiful birds and great program but felt rushed thru first part due to another tour arriving within a few minutes. Instead take the shuttle to the Fortress of the Bear. Afterwards Driver will drop people (at their request) at the Raptor center or Sitka Totem Park when returning passengers to Sitka.

As Raptor Centers go... (and we've seen quite a few)... this one is superb, plus it has the best and biggest flight pen we've ever seen. Definitely worth seeing, and their grounds and location by the river is absolutely gorgeous.

I went here right after going to Fortress of the Bear so it was a little disappointing. Eagles and owls are just not as awe-inspiring as bears...However the facility does very good work and is to be commended for saving the wildlife.

We arrived here in a torrential downpour so spent limited time in the outside section. Also we were right behind a large tour group so missed out on a lot of the explanations and demonstrations that were happening in the flight center. So we did not get the full experience.

We did manage to get to see a Q&A and demonstration with HALi, one of the eagles and a handler. That was interesting.

The gift shop and free coffee are a great way to relax indoors and get out of the weather.

We were going to catch the shuttle bus bacxk to town but were running out of time so the center lent us their phone to call a taxi. It was only $7 back to the port which was cheaper than the trolley which would have been $5 for each of us and would have taken 30 minutes.

Admission fee is $12 for the center.

Please don't miss the work that is being done at the Alaska Raptor Center! Visitors have the opportunity to see first hand how raptors are saved, cared for and released if at all possible. It not, they are housed and cared for, for life. Meet "Sitka" a stunning bald eagle that has permanent injuries that prevent her from being released. She is trained and visitors have the chance to see her up close in an educational encounter! There are many other raptors to see and learn about~

Rarely do I have an opportunity to visit a center that rescues birds. This one is superb. In addition to seeing birds, there is a professional lecture on how the birds are rescued and returned to their natural habitat. And the big treat is an opportunity to meet up close a bald eagle and hear a lecture by a professional who helps rehabilitate these animals.
The gift shop is excellent and I appreciate visiting places where my purchases go to helping a worthwhile cause - and the raptor center certainly is that. Opportunities to support the center are also available for those interested in doing so.
It may not sound like a wonderful time, but in the end I rate this as a "must see" in Sitka. And I take my hat off to the fine people staffing the center.
