An incredible selection of artifacts, mostly collected by Sheldon Jackson in the late 1800s. Be sure to look at the stuff in the drawers as well. Allow 2-3 hours.

We spent a short time in the museum as it was late and we were tired, but the amount of matierials on display was amazing. This provided the best documentation of materials illustrating native life at the turn of the century that we found in Sitka.

This museum contains a wealth of native items. Hard to believe that a rain suit can be made of fish skin. The museum is small but has wonderful displays and staff encourage you to look in the cabinets and are willing to discuss any of the items, skills, etc.

A wonderfully wide selection of artifacts from many tribes of Native Americans in the Alaska area. Very well- preserved.
They have a scavenger hunt for kids, which proved to be a bit challenging for the 7 and 9 year olds with us. They asked the docent for some help, and next thing you knew she was going through the entire thing with the boys, not only helping them find the artifacts but also telling them a lot of additional information about each one. She also noticed that the teen boys weren't completely engaged at first. Next thing you knew she brought out polar bear teeth and lots of pelts for this to feel. She also showed them a lot of hunting implements. The docent is what really made our experience so wonderful.

So impressed with the artifacts and how well the native peoples lived and what they fashioned out of grass and fish skin etc. You could spend an entire day here.
