“Operated by the State”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2012

This is a state operated museum on the campus of a former college. It is located at the north end of Lincoln Street near the Sitka National Park. It is essentially one very large room with the artifacts presented in a logical fashion using display cases and numerous pull-out drawers for smaller items. It is the collection of native AK artifacts collected over 20 years by Mr. Jackson who was a Presbyterian Minister and now houses over 6,000 pieces. Everything is authentic and the staff is professional. There is a small entrance fee.

“So much in such a small space”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2012

Well worth the $5 admission. So much packed into such a small space. Amazing collection. Fun to open the drawers and see the artifacts/collections arranged inside.

“Amazingly Large Collection Of Native Artifacts”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2012

It was pretty amazing to see all these artifacts, which are only a small portion of the total collection, which were mostly collected by just one man. It's weird to think that the natives here were making their first contact with Western society just over 100 years ago. Sometimes history isn't quite as long ago as you imagine.

“Lots of native Alaskan artifacts in unique building”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2012

Wow, relatively small museum is jam-packed with 100 yr old native Alaskan artifacts and stuff. So much to see. I found it very interesting to see pics of all the artifacts when Sheldon Jackson started the museum, its pretty much what you see now. Anyway, if you want to get a (long) look at native Alaskan artifacts this is one of the best museums to do that. Recommended for 1-3 hrs.
