“Site of the Baranof Castle”
Reviewed January 5, 2012

Was disappointed when I climbed up to the site of the castle. I was expecting to see some remnants of the old castle. There was nothing there but a beautiful view and some informative outdoor posters.....

“Imagine the History”
Reviewed November 24, 2011

It goes by many names, but the locals all refer to it as "Castle Hill." The map from the visitor center is very good at helping you find it. Otherwise you have to know to go down the alley and then up the long stairway through the trees to the top of the hill. At the top there are interpretive signs that tell you that here sat the great "Castle" of the Baronoff family, the Russian governors of Alaska for many years. It was a heavily fortified position because of battles with the Tlinglit people. There are a couple of cannons left behind, one of them aimed right at the cruise ship when we were there! :-) This is also the site where Alaska was deeded over to the US by the Russians, and Sitka holds a big celebration here every year on the anniversary of that signing. The park is just a circular sidewalk inside the low Castle wall, but the views are great, especially if, using your mind's eye, you can imagine all the history that took place here.
