“Great to help rehabilitate bears”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2014

It's a great way to see bears up close and to contribute to their welfare. Our guide was passionate and knowledgeable and it's well worth spending an hour or two here.

“Bears up close!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2014

Good opportunity to watch Brown and Black bears up close. Black Bears do not live on this island. If you live here buy the family pass and enjoy the bears as often as you like. Almost everyone enjoys the show. Give it an hour or so.

“Bears up close and personal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2014

We have been to the fortress twice. Each time was a very satisfying experience. The staff is friendly and will answer any questions you have. This year we also saw three orphaned black bear cubs. This organization takes in orphaned bears and saves them. Later they may be shipped out to responsible facilities. The cost is minimal--$13. Catch the bus at the bridge and ride out to the fortress. Usually the drivers know a great deal about Sitka and are very helpful. The fortress depends entirely on donations and entrance fees. Do a good service for Alaska wildlife and visit.

“Incredible non-profit with awesome staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2014

This non-profit was one of the most impressive organizations that I have learned about in quite some time. We will be adding them to our list of charties that we support as a family. The facility is humble but designed with the well-being of the bears that are housed there. The staff consisted of intelligent, educated, articulate people who are struggling to do the best they can to raise these orphaned bears. The bears are obviously happy, healthy and stimulated- a testament to the hard work of the staff. A great place to visit and a great place to donate to- we were incredibly moved by the work being done by this small facility. Get off your cruise boat and visit- it was a highlight of our trip!!!

“Really cool - well worth the trip.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2014

This attraction was somewhat of a surprise. It was raining when we were in Sitka so, on a whim, we took the $5 trolley bus ride to see the Fortress of the Bear. The drive around the bay was awesome in itself, and the weather was much better just a few minutes from town. This bear rescue center is quite something to see. The bears are contained, but it is really up close and personal. And, they had recently rescued three black bear cubs, which was an extra bonus. We also didn't expect the amazing show with the eagles. Three eagles were waiting in the tree line for the bear keeper to throw salmon to the bears. The eagles dive for salmon heads, and they were so close, I almost wanted to duck. An amazing opportunity. Plus, there happened to be a couple of sled dog puppies on the property that day, which our daughter loved. This was a highlight of the trip. I highly recommend it.
