We were very fortunate to be the only visitors at the time we were there. Our 8 and 5-year-old grandsons were enthralled. We watched as the bears were fed breakfast, and then we got to feed the bears apples. Yes, it is pretty amazing to have a coastal brown bear lick your hand! It is obvious that Les and the limited staff are devoted to protecting these bears and providing visitors with an amazing experience. If you have an opportunity to visit Sitka, this is a must stop. Besides your dollars help with this important cause!

This is a great place to see captive bears and to learn about wildlife in Alaska. It's a no-frills rescue operation in a gorgeous location. An hour or so here is more than enough, but it was a highlight of Sitka for me.

A wonderful refuge for wayward bears! The carers here look after bears who in our terms, would be on the streets! The have become reasonably tame towards their keepers who nurse them to health and find them a suitable place to move to. You view the bears very easily and clearly from a high board walk and they are fascinating to observe. It is obviously run by committed volunteers who all deserve a medal. Looks a little cash strapped (entry by well deserved donation) but that doesn't detract from the beautiful and happy bears. (And the resident free eagles.) Note for disabled, stairs to climb.

Some think it's just a big circus, but here's an opportunity to stand quietly above the "fortress" and watch brown bears feed, play, and watch us. There's not much more to it than just looking at five bears, but the bears can be riveting.

Fortress of the Bear takes in orphaned and/or injured young bears. Good chance to see these beautiful animals up close.
