This is an amazing place! 5 Bears, all roaming around. They were very active, playing with each other, swimming, etc. They look so cute but then you get to see them stand up and they are ENORMOUS! They even helped us get a ride back to town. This place is amazing and well worth the trip!

Great people doing great work. Also bears! This is a great opportunity to see bears close up. Would be great for kids, I think.

Still being developed so is a bit rough round the edges, but the facility is there to cre for orphaned bear cubs, and to try to find these bears a home. We were able to get up close an personal with the bears - we were able to touch one of the paws thru a steel gate. People were very knowledgeable and helpful. Get the local bus as far as possible and then walk about 2 kilometers (in winter) along some fabulous scenery. I believe there is a local bus in summer. We loved it

Loved this attraction!! Spent at least 2 hours watching the bears be bears at a safe distance yet close enough to see them. Did not get eaten! The stories behind each bear is interesting and the admission fee made me feel good to help them keep this great facility and it's mission going. Great use of an old useless structure! Very natural and un-zoo like. You know these bears are happy.

We took a cab to the Herring Cove Trail, which is just up the road from the Fortress of the Bear. After hiking past Beaver Lake and down Blue Lake Road, we came to the Fortress. We found the entrance fee a little steep at $10 per person, but the rehabilitation efforts somewhat justify the extra cost. We were also able to take the free shuttle back to Sitka, so the cost wasn't too bad in the end.

From the elevated walkways, we could obtain excellent pictures of the bears, and they sure seemed happy and active. There was also a small farm animal area on the grounds that might be of interest to younger visitors.

If you want a different view of the Fortress of the Bear, hike up Blue Lake Road (just west of the entrance). Once you've gained some elevation, you will find that you are directly above the bear enclosures. From this vantage point you can see into the pens and watch the people as they watch the bears. If you're up for a hike, you could even continue up Blue Lake Road to the Beaver Lake Trail.
