“What a Warm, Friendly, Lovely Experience”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

We planned a last-minute escape for a few days in early October and were fortunate enough to find a room available at Christa's lovely B&B. The setting is beautiful and the house beautifully appointed and immaculately maintained. Although it initially seemed out of the way as we continued to climb up the mountain, Once Upon a Mountain is so superior to the other accommodations that we saw on either side of the mountain that it was more than worth the drive and turned out, in fact, to be convenient for visiting Shenandoah National Park each day. Christa gave us a dining recommendation which we would never have discovered on our own and she was so "on the same page" with us that we completely trusted her. We had great talks, sat with our feet up in the living room and watched the first Presidential debate together, and generally felt so much at home that we sometimes forgot to close our bedroom door!
We peeked into all of the bedrooms and each looked delightful. Breakfast was delicious and a delightful social experience. Our visit to Christa's home made our holiday memorable. Thank you!

This stay was a stopover on the way to Asheville and after being on the road from Florida to Maine and return for more than three weeks. The B&B is on a mountain so getting there involves a trek up a gravel, but well maintained, winding road. Once there, the setting is storybook with beautiful views of a meadow and mountains. The Queen room is quite spacious with its own private deck access. We had a wonderful night's rest -- no sounds but nature's -- and a delicious breakfast. It is a bit of a drive back to Luray for dinner. I would recommend bringing something for dinner to the B&B (you could use the kitchen, I'm sure) and save the drive back and forth especially if you have multiple night stays. Our only regret is that we stayed only one night since we were on a schedule for our next stop.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked delightful.

We, a family of four, visited Virginia for the first time at the end of September 2012, just as Fall colors started. Once Upon a Mountain was the perfect place to stay to enjoy the Shenandoah National Park. Christa made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and gave us excellent information and suggestions to discover the area. We loved the accommodation and appreciated Christa's eye for detail. It felt like a home away from home. The breakfasts were just way better than at home! We also enjoyed the good conversations we had. Wish we could stay longer.... Maybe next time!

We stayed in the Sleeping Beauty Suite and had a wonderful 3 night stay. Christa was the perfect host - knowledgeable of the area with great suggestions for us to make the most of our stay. The breakfasts were delicious and for us a great change from the 'full english'. When we arrived I was really missing a good cup of tea. Christa soon remedied this and even invited me to make a cup in her kitchen before bedtime - a real home from home. She was a really thoughtful host and even gave me some teabags when we left so that I could ask for hot water at other hotels and get a proper cup of tea. The Sleeping Beauty suite is very comfortable with wonderful views of the mountain. The hot tub was lovely to relax in after a day on the Appalation trail.
Lake Arrowhead is nearby and a real treasure. Easy walk around the lake and a great swim from the beach. Showers on site.
Willie, Christa's great dog made it feel very homely for us.
I would thoroughly recommend Once upon a Mountain was its comfort, tranquility, views and hospitality.

Room Tip: Sleeping Beauty has great views of the mountain and sunrise is beautiful.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at Once Upon a Mountain in the lovely Queen Suite. We chose this room for the jacuzzi and private deck with chairs. We also took advantage of the outdoor hot tub.
We had a bonfire one night and enjoyed s'mores with other guests. Christa prepared 2 fabulous breakfasts....banana stuffed french toast and egg, ham, cheese cassarole...all served with fruit and yogurt, OJ, and coffee.

Christa was warm, friendly, and easy to talk to, giving us great advice about places to visit. But she gave us privacy, as well. It is a beautiful home, secluded with a great view and I highly recommend it!

My significant other and I recently stayed at the Once Upon a Mountain B&B and had a relaxing birthday weekend celebration. Christa was the perfect hostess and made a fabulous breakfast. Having tea outside your room was a very nice touch and we enjoyed it on our deck overlooking the mountains before we had breakfast at 9.The first morning she had a parfait for the first course and eggs and a croissant with fruit and tomatoes fro the second. Although we are not a egg eater and we should have told her that before they were fabulous and very filling. Christa went out of town the second day and Gail made the most fabulous french toast casserole ever. In fact I took some of home because it was just way too much food. Our room was fabulous and very modern with lots of light. I will say that the shower in in Sleeping Beauty room was a little small and the house could have been a little more soundproof. No biggie. I am recommending this to all of my friends and plan to come back with two other couples and rent out the entire house.

Room Tip: The Sleeping Beauty room lets in a lot of light and the deck has breathtaking views. The shower is a...

My husband and I are very low key people and wanted a nice getaway for the weekend to celebrate our 10th anniversary. After reading the reviews we decided to take a chance on Once Upon A Mountain. We were blown away. The "Sleeping Beauty" suite has a breathtaking view of the mountains, a wonderful little deck and a very romantic feel. Christa was so welcoming, full of excellent information and arrainged a wonderful dinner for us. She made a great breakfast, and set a tray of coffee every morning right outside the door. We will be returning to this wonderful B&B. Thank you Christa for making our stay so special!
