“Best birthday present ever!”
Reviewed June 13, 2012

June 2nd was my wife, Carol's, 50th birthday. I asked her what she wanted to mark this exciting milestone and she said she wanted to see the Shenandoah Valley and take a hot air balloon ride. I knew then that what would make or break this celebration was the B&B we would stay in. We searched online and looked at dozens of choices. We finally settled on "Once Upon a Mountain" hoping it would be as nice as it looked on the website. Well, we have to say it was beyond our wildest expectations! We stayed in the "Sleeping Beauty" room which is one of three very nice rooms. We liked that there were only three rooms so there wouldn't be too many people. We wanted something intimate and quiet. We were blown away by the beautiful cabin architecture and the spectacular view of the valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. While my wife doesn't drink coffee, I do. I was treated to a piping hot pitcher of savory java awaiting me each morning right outside our door. Just outside the glass doors of our room facing the mountains was a deck where we sat and relaxed taking in the view. We had plenty of space and the bed was quite comfortable. The breakfasts were fantastic - delicious with a nice variety from morning to morning. The owner, Christa, made us feel completely welcome and at home. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her and her friends who stopped by one evening. They even invited us to join them for a glass of wine! We couldn't have felt more welcome. As it turned out, our hot air balloon ride was cancelled due to high winds. So my wife's big birthday request didn't work out. But our stay at "Once Upon a Mountain" more than made up for it! Thanks, Christa (and Mike) for making Carol's 50th birthday one we'll never forget! See you again soon!

Was as magical as the first. We stay in the Queen Suite (The largest and coolest of the rooms but I am told they are all very nice) which features a nice large whirlpool bath, large walk-in closet and door to our own private deck...

The breakfast is created and served by Christa who has a talent for making you feel like family and is as easy going and accommodating as a host can be. She goes the extra mile and then some to make you feel special and the dog, Willie makes sure you know you are loved:)

A huge back yard with a hot tub, firepit and hammock for 2 are the only real difficulty in that they give you too many choices as to how to relax...so do them all! The view is lovely too...

Did I mention breakfast? Each day is a new treat masquerading as a work of art. There is much love and warmth there and seclusion because that's one of the reasons you chose to stay there.

Luray is close by as is Skyline Drive and a number of little boutique-y towns which offer local color, surprising cuisine (the Mexican restaurant in Luray is amazing and the Artisan Grille never disappoints)...

Stay there

Room Tip: As I said, the Queen Suite is the best room and the most expensive and that's the room we stay i...

The stars shine there like no where else! The hostess was so kind and sincere! The breakfast was great! The house was clean and classy. So many pros... only one con.. BUGS! I am a city girl.. and while it makes sense that bugs would be present at a cabin in the woods I was not prepared for it.

Still I would love to return and highly recommend this B&B!

Room Tip: All of them were nice.. we were on the ground level with a patio door. Maybe the higher ones didn...

Beautiful large rooms and commOn spaces. Christa the owner was delightful and helpful. Gorgeous breakfast. Balcony hammock and hot tub to ensure relaxation. Really felt totally removed and in wilderness, but in very comfortable setting! There is a drive up gravel roads but perfectly navigable.

If you find yourself in or near the D.C. area and need to get away from the heat, concrete and car horns. This is the place. Classy, quiet and at the top of a mountain with spectacular views. Two summers ago my husband and I were on our way from Michigan to North Carolina when we stumbled upon this place and decided we had to go back. This B&B is beautiful, the hostess was charming and the attention to detail was superb. We were expecting a simple over-night, extended it to two, enjoyed breakfast in bed and a hot-tub under the stars. Last summer we did it again and I'm writing this because our annual pilgrimage is about to commence. What a nice change from the flat lands of Michigan and the heat of the Eastern Sea-Board in July.

Room Tip: The Princess suite is the place to sleep with it's large, private jacuzzi bath and semi-private...

Just back from a wonderful weekend at 'Once Upon a Mountain'. This B&B is a gem in the Shenandoah Mountains. The first thing Christa did was offer me a glass of wine to enjoy in the hot tub. What a view! Doesn't get any better than this!!!!

We absolutely loved our stay at Once Upon a Mountain! The home was absolutely lovely, welcoming and very clean. The innkeeper, Christa, was everything in a hostess you would want! We stayed in the "Sleeping Beauty" room. It was perfect. The bedding was wonderful, the towels were so luxurious, and the decor was so homey! We were only able to stay one night - but we used the hot tub 3 times - it was perfect! You can't find a better view in Luray than Once Upon a Mountain. We wanted some place close to hike in Shenandoah and this B&B was perfect. Christa made excellent recommendations for dinner. We hope to visit again!
