“Romantic Getaway”
Reviewed April 13, 2012

For seven years I have been surprising my daughter and son-in-law with reservations at Shadow Mountain Escapes-I booked for their honeymoon and every year after for their anniversary! The cabins are on the edge of the Shenandoah National Park and provide a great romantic escape for them! The special celebration touches that the Riddles provide are priceless!
HOT TIP: Find a babysitter so you can enjoy the romantic escape.

We could not have asked for more during our trip to Shadow Mountain escape in February. We went up for our anniversary weekend and has an absoluetly amazing time. From how beautful and unique the cabins and property are to the hospitality and little extras from the owners really made our trip complete. They even made us a delicious little red velvet cake and other homeade goodies to enjoy. We highly recommend going on the nature trail and even taking the owners recommendation to hike up church bell hill. We did and it was breathtaking. We even renewed our vows at the top of the mountain. There is no better way to put it than we could not have asked for more. What they have up there is a little piece of heaven :)

Room Tip: Each of the cabins are unique and offer something different. We stayed in the bumble bee cabin which...

My wife and I spent a long weekend here in January 2012 and had an excellent experience in the LadyBug cabin. We love hiking in the Shenandoah's and getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city and thought we'd give this place a try. It's on the short list of places we'd like to go back to. Overall, I'd recommend spending some time on their informative website picking out a cabin that best fits your tastes. The experience promised was exactly the experience delivered. Some special points warrant mention:

Karen (owns the cabin with her husband Ralph) was one of the friendliest and enthusiastic folks I've met. Upon arrival, she had freshly baked cookies, chocolate brownies, biscotti, as well as a bottle of freshly carbonated spring water (from a well on their property) ready for our enjoyment. After a quick walkthrough, she brought us some kindling for the wood stove and marshmallows for the campfire she was going to set-up for us at sundown. The wood stove added a great ambiance to the cabin and roasting marshmallows over a campfire in the crisp mountain night was a great way to kick off our experience.

The cabin itself looked almost brand new. The downstairs was a large dining area with mini-fridge, microwave, and wood-burning stove. The upstairs was a large bedroom with beautiful views of the surrounding mountainside and a private bathroom. The exposed timber frame is quite a sight to behold and complements the decor of the cabin well. The only thing I missed was a nice big tub to soak in, but I understand some of their other cabins do have this feature. I might have to give that a try next time.

We had a great time walking around both the nature trail that goes around the property and taking a longer hike down Jewell Hollow Road that forms the border with Shenandoah National Park. For meals, our favorite part was taking a short drive into downtown Luray. Uncle Buck's is a great little diner for breakfast and the rest of Luray has a bunch of interesting little stores that warrant an hour or two of exploring.

In summary, this place delivers a quiet, peaceful retreat that seems ideal for couples looking to get away for a long weekend. The website sets high expectations and delivers on them.

Room Tip: Check their website to find one of the three cabins that best fits your taste.

The pictures do not do this place justice. The cabins are beautiful set amidst a quiet mountain reprieve. Each log cabin (authentically timber framed) is uniquely decorated with European trinkets. My husband and I spent an hour just admiring the antiques, wood work and pottery. Even the kitchen was stocked with high quality William Sonoma plates and European beer mugs. This is perfect for a quiet getaway to breathe fresh mountain air and relax. You feel like you are staying at an expensive European hideaway.

Cabin descriptions:
1) Cabins are 2 level. Top level has a bedroom, deck and living room, bottom level has a second living room, large kitchen and bathroom.
2) Kitchen has everything you can possibly need to cook and serve a gormet meal. I even found a pastry brush and wine decanter!
3) There is a TV with satellite channels
4) Firewood and fire starter is provided for cabins with stoves/fireplaces
5) The cabin looks and feels like a luxury swiss chalet--truly extraordinary. the pictures on the website don't do it justice.

Property Descroption:
1) There is an observation tower and "cantina" where you can meet friends.
2) There is a camp fire on selected nights that's nice to go sit by
3) The property has nature trails and is very quiet
4) Luray is a quick 10 min drive and it's right off skyline drive
5) the owners are super nice and will greet you personally, give you a tour, and give you some home baked goodies.

Pros:
1) extraordinary property, very quiet and relaxing and romantic
2) full kitchen is nice
3) there is a wonderful italian restaurant that delivers
4) feeling of privacy and isolation

Cons:
1) no cell or wireless internet--totally unplugged vacation. There is a landline you can use in the cabin
2) Mattress in the bumble bee cabin where we stayed was springy--probably should be replaced.
3) children not allowed (probably because of all the previous antiques the cabins are filled with)

What not to expect:
The website is totally accurate on what's included and not. Breakfast is not included (which they tell you) and that's a downside but you can cook your own in the lovely kitchen or go into Luray. Maid service is also not provided. But, the cabins are priced with the exclusion of these luxuries. They are total luxury cabins and a resonable cost.

Overall, this place is extraordinary. We will go back.

Room Tip: All of the cabins are beautiful. Bring some hot chocolate you can make up and take to the campfire i...

The fascinating decor and beautiful location make up for a few missing items in the bathroom. The kids loved the upstairs loft and the pond. It was so quiet and dark each night (don't try to find the first night after dark, you can't see a thing on the roads). The campfire was very nice, and being able to wash your smokey clothing so nice! Yes, provide your own shampoo etc, but the kitchen has a variety of spices etc, and the baked goodies divine!

Our stay at Shadow Mountain Escape was truly wonderful! The Ladybug cabin is beautiful and the thought put into every detail shows the care that Karen & Ralph have for the land and their guests. The cabin was cozy & warm and very energy efficient. The woodstove was a delight, especially since we had an early fall snow! We loved looking through the observation tower and the cantina. It made us feel we were back in Germany again! The baked goods were out of this world and the campfire was wonderful! Every detail, down to the coffee mugs, was a special treat. What a wonderful way to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary! We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: The Ladybug Cabin is the smallest and newest cabin on the property. It is very clean and charming. T...

Stayed two nights here in October in the Ladybug Cabin.
Great value for money t $165/night, but felt that the cabin could have done with a little more thinking through. For example there was no bedside light so had to have the main lighting on, then get out of bed and turn it off before stumbling back to bed in the dark.
Also there was no clothes storage space, eg. a hanging rail.
The cabin was cosy enough and well heated.
No kitchen facilities but a phone and a few take-away brochures were enough to keep us catered.

We appreciate the review and we're glad the guest recognized the value and comfort of our newest and smallest Lady Bug timber frame cabin. As with all our customer reviews on trip advisor, we will utilize the feedback as we continually upgrade our cabins. We encourage our customers to see all of our TripAdvisor reviews. The Lady Bug timber frame cabin is consistently recognized by vacationing couples as a comfortable and charming romantic get-a-way. Although of highest quality and charming, the Lady bug cabin is very unique and, relative to our other cabins, smaller in size - please see our web site for detailed photos and further description. For guests travelling with a large amount of baggage and/or expecting a kitchen, our large timber frame Dragonfly or Bumblebee Cabins would be the best choice.
