My girlfriend and I spent a wonderful day and night at Shadow Mountain Escape. We stayed at the Bumble Bee cabin and enjoyed the Alpine theme and found the cabin clean, cozy and very romantic. Karen and Ralph are great hosts and go out of their way to ensure your stay is the best it can be. I know my now fiancée and I will be back to Shadow Mountain Escape.

This place is wonderful and enchanting. The European theme that the owners have recreated is dead on. If you are looking for a place that is quiet, conveniently located with a romantic touch, then Shadow Mountain Escape is the perfect place for you.

I surprised my fiancee with a trip down here and we were both immediately in love with the timber frame cabins and the surrounding area. Karen and Ralph are EXCELLENT hosts; two of the kindest people we ever met. The baked goods and wine they provided were notably excellent. It is within minutes of Shenandoah National Park, where we hiked the beautiful snowy trails in absolute solitude. I also did not find it to be an issue that they do not accept credit cards.

Shadow Mountain Escape was exactly what we hoped it would be. The Riddles have created a little bit of heaven with their cabins. We stayed in the Butterfly Loft. It was cozy and warm. It was clean and comfortable. The gift basket was incredible, as was the wine. Karen even made us a cake for our anniversary. She is a wonderful host! And that's the way she made us feel, as though we were welcome guests. The book of things to do was perfect: we used it as a guide for the entire weekend. Karen's recommendations for the local scene were right on the money. If she recommends it, it's worth doing. We had a great time at the camp fire roasting marshmallows. Playing darts in La Cantina was a blast. Shadow Mountain Escapes has it all, and we will surely return.

Our family of 6 traveled for 5.5 hours to the escape from Charlotte, N.C., and our friends (family of 4) traveled 7 hours from Bedford (Westchester co.), NY, by minivan, but we're used to it. For at least 5 years we have returned over Veteran's Day weekend. The creek was perfect for everyone, and Kathryn, 2, loved "feeding" the fish at the clear pond. We went to senior night football at Luray high school; sadly, Central was blowing out the Bulldogs 28-7 in the 3rd quarter so we decided to leave. We celebrated the Virginia Tech win over UNC (despised!!!) and invited the owners Karen and Ralph, but they had plans for the outdoors. Still, Karen brought delicious homemade brownies and popcorn. Previously we have enjoyed the Hawksbill Creek Greenway (Luray), the Luray Zoo, and hiking in Shenandoah Nat'l. Park. Plus, 20 minutes away is Food Lion and Wal-Mart in case you forget a necessity. We rented the whole lodge and the setup worked great. From the observation tower we could spot deer on frosty mornings (no bear yet!), and the dart board and the European charm of the "Cantina" was unmatched. We enjoy Karen's treats and hospitality, the houses are great, and we will definitely come back again.
