“One of the best hikes in the park”

Stony Man is a classic of Shenandoah. The hike itself is beautiful. You will get to see the highest point of the Appalachian trail in the park, probably see some wildlife, and pass many spots to veer off the path and go explore. When you reach the top, you will be extremelyyyy satisfied. There are 2 main overlooks and you could easily spend an hour climbing around the summit and checking out the views. The hike itself is pretty easy, so there is absolutely no reason to miss this hike when you're in the area.

There's nothing not to like, if you can walk you can hike this. The view from the top of Stony Man can't be beat.

Wonderful views of the valley from the top. A short hike with about 400 foot climb but not steep anywhere from the Skyland parking area (approaching from the south side).

Can imagine it would be cowded in the warmer weather months, but in mid-Feb on a windy Sunday we only saw 2 other groups of people hiking and were alone on the summit (with a ton of wind - be care on the rocks up there if it's windy.) Signs say no pets which i would guess in season would be a useful rule with crowds.

There a spot a little down from the summit that is sheltered if you're looking for a spot for lunch out of the wind at the top. There are 2 approaches - the main one from the south and the skyland parking area (facilities were closed for winter, but section of the parking area was open). We had planned to do the northern approach with a trail head off the skyline drive about 1-2 miles further north, but with the snow decided the southern approach would be more clear - looked like this was a wise decision in February. Northern approach might be less crowded in warm weather if you can get place to park at the trail head.

This is our favorite hike on the Skyline Drive. We return season after season. We've watch the hawks soar, learned about early copper mining in the area and just enjoyed the hike getting there and watching the trains in the Shenandoah Valley.

This hike is around 3 miles if that much. Even if you're a couch potato you can do this hike. Get up and see the best view from the highest point of the park. The views are breathtaking and you won't regret it.
