Every year, several of my friends and family make a weekend summer trip to Shenandoah River Outfitters. We set up camp Friday during the day, enjoy lunch, hike, play horse shoes, swim in the river, and enjoy the out doors. Saturday, we wake up go to the river and canoe throughout the day. Lunch is provided on the river. We swim, fish, relax, and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The bus bring you back to camp where there are showers (with warm water) and relax again. Then dinner is served, "ALL YOU CAN EAT STEAK." After dinner, we relax and again enjoy friends and family in the great out doors. Then Sunday, pack up and leave at a leisurely pace.
This has been a tradition since 2005 all the way up until this year. There are no extra frills. The staff and rangers are nice. It is very laid back. It is roughing it, but there are snacks and ice at the office you can buy. This is a nice all around trip.
Do not expect 5 stars accomidation but it is every thing plus more in an outdoor adventure.

Shenandoah River Outfittrs are wonderful. From the phone call explaining my situation (9year old daughter who was "afraid" of sitting in a tube with a hole-having experienced that on the Salt River in Arizona) and presenting us with options(single tubes with bottoms or a raft that seated 6 plus our picnic lunch and fishng gear)SRO were professional and friendly. We had a wonderful time (opted for the raft) although the river was slow and the "ride" took a longer time (12-430)than normal. The rapids wre "Class 1" due to the low river level but still lots of fun for a boatload of teens and 9 year old). We had a picnic on shore and there is lots of fishing(mostly bass). Bring lots of sunscreen (we went midday July) and water/drinks and clean up!(There are garbage bags at end of trip at site 19 where bus picks you up to dispose of your garbage). There are a couple of rope swings along the way (if you are brave enough). Lots of fun and an a dventure. Scenery is beautiful. apparently , at times, you can see beavers, eagles etc (we didn't). Located near Luray Caverns, we thought we could do both attractions in one day, but it took a ittle longer than anticipated (although the Caverns stay open until 7pm I believe). Get directions and believe your GPS because we got lost getting there-it looks like you are heading into nowhere but eventually there will be signs letting you know you are heading in the right direction!nce at the "store" where you are outfitted with your gear, they drive you to the drooff and place to get in. A bus is waiting for those who are finished at site 19-big stop sign to let you know you have arrived! You won't fall in unless you want to but you can canoe, kayak, raft or tube-you wear a PFD(lifevest). By the way-your arms get pretty tired paddling down the river in a raft-it has drag more than a canoe which glides! so go work out your biceps!

The staff is professional, well informed and helpful. Well organized. Plan on being on the river 5 hours if you are tubing. May be a little long for younger children. We would kayak next time so it would go a bit faster.

We were staying at Massanutten Resort near Harrisonburg. I had rented a canoe here over 20 years ago many times when living in Burke Va. Darlene and I like to flyfish rented a canoe for the 11 am 8 mile float. Staff at SRO friendly and helpful, great equipment and now require a safety video which was a good refresher. Was a beautiful day, nice float, company great and we caught and released some frisky small mouth. We were the last to arrive at the drop off point at about 4:45 pm due there at 5. Fishing takes longer that's OK the float was relaxing and in the beautiful Shenandoah. Nice to see it is still wonderful after 20 years!!!
