The hotel is of interest only to those who never knew it before it changed hands. For the rest of us, the only thing left of its original charm is the architecture. What was once a unique and popular place is now a generic, asepticized shell devoid of warmth. Front desk staff—including the self-superior, opinionated concierge—come off as arrogant, sniffy, and unhelpful, unaware of their place and evidently of their own appearance. We will never again subject ourselves to the disaster this hotel has become.

Having stayed at La Fonda many times I have to say that it has undergone a lot of changes since its long time owner passed away and his children sold it to two people from Texas. The charming unique bar and lounge is now looking like just about any hotel anywhere and the lobby in particular the front desk is the same, it could be in any hotel. Locals told me that they don't feel as welcome as they use to be which is unfortunate as that was the great thing is you could meet all types of interesting & colorful locals and learn some great history and tips on what to see.

I have stayed here five times over the past 15 years. Every time it gets renovated - it loses more of its Heritage. The Lobby: Never saw so much visiting and employee 'fun' going on - especially at the desk. It gives an initial impression of loose discipline. I did not see any bellboys nor did the valet parking offer to have the luggage delivered. The Room: Very nice and clean/quiet - but almost all traces of the SW quaintness it had are gone. The furniture is all 'hotel standard' - the exception of the painted headboards. They beds have nice comforters - but no spreads or décor -- Hospital Sterile at best. Nice bathroom with nice amenities. Food: Décor is the same as last time - though I wish for high end prices - there were tablecloths and attractive dishware (here is sterile white, again). The wait staff keep getting more and more casual. I saw the wearing jeans under there aprons and inconsistent shirts, etc... The young girls at the desk are always disorganized amongst themselves and visiting each other, here too. Why have 2 or 3 young people doing the job that one or two mature and professional host's can do? The food is always good - can't complain there. Gift Shops: Nice selection and we bought things and browsed in others.
