“Nuevo Mexicano without a doubt”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

La Fonda is conscious of its position as the showpiece hotel in Santa Fe, and by and large it gets things right - attentive service, comfortable rooms, convenient parking. We ate in both La Plazuela and the coffee shop whose name temporarily escapes me, and the meals were perfectly good without being haute cuisine. They were able to cater for my daughter's food allergies, too. Another time we would make a point of ordering the guacamole if only to watch the waiter put it together at the table, scooping the avocados out deftly and mixing the flesh with tomato, chilli, onion, whatever.

Where it particularly scored was in the decor. Too many hotels have a soul-deadening pastel look to them, as if the designer was afraid to run the risk of offending people with bright colours. La Fonda is in New Mexico and lets you know it - oxblood tiles in the lobby, and everywhere turquoise and ochre and deep red, even along the corridors leading to the rooms.

Surprisingly, our room was smaller than we had expected, and smaller than we had found in some hotels with far fewer pretensions, but not so small as to be inconvenient. And I know that people under 21 are not allowed to be served liquor in the States, or even (it appears) to be in places where it is served, but it was a pity that the barman in the rooftop bar should tell us this so gracelessly in front of other guests. Would a quiet word have been so difficult?

But these are minor niggles. Stay here if you can.

Stayed here a few weeks ago and made our reservation after finding the hotel on Trip Advisor. Was a little concerned that it would not live up to some of its good reviews, but we were pleasantly surprised by the hotel, the reception we received, the ease of parking and the terrific location and dining room. We were able to check in as soon as we arrived around noon. Trolley tour of town was right outside the door and all of our questions were answered promptly and with courtesy and professionalism. Dining room was lovely and food very good. Had both dinner and breakfast there...not something we normally do at hotels. Bell Tower Bar on the roof was lovely.

Room Tip: Room was standard, had all amenities and we had no problem with it. They accommodated my request for...

This was my first time in Santa Fe and at The La Fonda on the Plaza. I would definitely return. It's an old hotel with a rich history. If you like generic, predictable, franchise hotel design then it's not for you. However, if you can appreciate historic landmarks you'll enjoy La Fonda. I've heard there will be some renovation to rooms in January which is needed; but I hope changes are done with attention to detail for keeping the hotel's vintage charm. Our room on the second floor was definitely small, but clean, comfortable, and quiet. The location is perfect, allowing for lovely walks to points of interest and boutique shopping. The La Plazuela Restaurant in the lobby has excellent food. Reservations are usually needed for dinner. The $12 per day parking fee for guests is the only thing that seems unreasonable. Considering the cost of rooms parking should be free. If you go to the hotel's website and sign up for emails, you can get notification of special rates and packages ahead of time. After my stay in mid-October I got an email for a special rate that runs at the end of November which is $50 less per night than I paid AND includes free parking AND breakfast! Disappointed I didn't get that special so I am staying on their email list in case I go back to Santa Fe.

In the 40's and 50's my grandmother summered at the La Fonda. During the 60's I loved this hotel when both my grandparents were in residence. During the 70's and 80's, as a young man, I was a frequent visitor.

My recent weekend visit confirmed this facility has been well maintained in the Santa Fe manner...which means rooms had been renovated in the traditional New Mexican motif and the ground floor public areas still had the beautiful stone floors as well as its unique New Mexico decor.

Services were a little slow...but this is Santa Fe. For those who are about to have their first Santa Fe experience...the La Fonda should be the center of the initial Santa Fe visit.

This is a beautiful old hotel and the location simply can’t be beat. If you’re vacationing in Santa Fe and want to stay in the heart of Old Town, this is the place. Simply step out the front door and you are surrounded by the shops and restaurants on the Plaza.

We originally booked a King Suite but when we arrived we were informed we were upgraded to a 2-bedroom suite on the 5th floor – Suite 500. The suite consists of 2 separate rooms accessed by a small private corridor which leads to a huge private rooftop terrace. The suite is right next to the Bell Tower bar so we enjoyed the same beautiful sunset view without the crowd. Our rooms were clean, had comfortable beds and modern amenities like flat-screen TV’s.

The La Fonda is rich with history and has been beautifully maintained. Each room is unique with its own wonderful character. The whole property has an older, intimate feel that I absolutely love. Sure, it may cost a little more to stay here but it’s worth it. If you prefer modern accommodations, you will probably not appreciate the charm of the La Fonda and may be better served at one of the newer box hotels on Cerrillos Rd. But if you love the history and character you can experience at an older establishment, look no further – this is the place.

Room Tip: Highly recommend Suite 500!

The hotel is very old Santa Fe and by that I mean in decor and feel. We loved it.
We stayed in the cheapest room available. Who knew that there were rooms with only partial views of the sky?
Anyway, it was clean and small but comfortable.
The food and Marguerites are the best in Santa Fe. Music and dancing every night. No need to go any place else.

We stayed in La Fonda for 2 nights, having arrived late afternoon on our first night we didn't have much time to explore the facilities & town until the next day,
Our room was spacious and quiet despite being quite close to the lift. There was a fridge in the room and complimentary water.
We tried to go for a drink on the Bell Tower terrace but it was very busy & there were no unoccupied seats so we decided to go for dinner instead. This turned out to be a good move, the hotel has 2 dining areas, La Plazuela or La Fiesta Lounge (Mexican Buffet), we opted for La Plazuela & were fortunate to get the last table for 2 without a reservation, the service and food were very good.
The hotel has lots of character and little shops to visit, and is just off the main square in the town, so there's plenty to look at within a short walk.
We didn't use the pool/spa facilities, the hotel carpark was a bonus but comes at an additional charge.
We tried a late lunch on our second day at the La Fiesta lounge which was fine and plentiful, then we were lucky to go for early drinks at the Belltower on our second evening, here we enjoyed the warm sunshine pre sunset over a bottle of wine before heading out to sample the town's other establishments.
