“Alexander's inn "The Cottage"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2007

We stayed at "The Cottage" for ten days in October 2007 and found it to be the perfect location for getting comfortable with Sante Fe and the surrounding area. The accommodations were exactly as described and pictured on Alexander's Inn website. The Cottage is an easy walk to downtown and Canyon Road. There was plenty of room to consider the
Cottage a home rather than a hotel room. Being able to make light meals and have our own space was a tremendous plus to our vacation. Owner, Carolyn, was very helpful and thoughtful. We highly recommend the Cottage! Diane and Gary Ginsberg, Virginia.

My husband and I have stayed at Alexander’s Inn annually since our 1998 wedding. We initially chose the Inn because we liked the staff. This has remained true over our 9 years of staying there. Alexander’s Inn was a B&B until recently as the owner, Carolyn Lee, moved into the main house (which has freed up parking behind the Inn!). It is now considered a “vacation rental”. Check out Madeleine Inn for a nearby B&B with the same owner. We stay in the Cottage which is a roomy casita with dining area, living room, fireplace, and bathroom (shower and Jacuzzi tub) on the first floor. The bedroom is on the second floor reached by a narrow spiral staircase (not good for mobility impaired folks). The location is about 5 blocks east of the Plaza – an easy walk, but far enough away to be very quiet. The grounds are always beautiful. Most of all, the service is fantastic from little touches such as champagne and strawberries to celebrate an anniversary, to restaurant recommendations, etc. I highly recommend staying here. We plan to continue our annual trip here.

I found Alexander's Inn on the Santa Fe website. I followed the guided tours of the rooms, but was sold when I found intriguing recipes on their website. We stayed 4 nights in March. The rooms are lovely and comfortable. Close to the heart of the city, the location is ideal. The owner, Carolyn, and her wonderful staff were ever friendly and helpful with directions and recommendations. But MOST OF ALL, the food is extraordinary! I am a good cook who loves breakfast. Each morning was inventive and sumptuous. Afternoons brought wine, cheese, fruit, and homemade cookies.

We not only can't wait to go back, our daughter is getting married in Santa Fe next year, and we plan to take over the whole Inn.

The Alexander's Inn/Hacienda Nicholas is a charming place. The breakfasts, snacks, and evening wine & cheese are wonderful. The bed was comfortable, the common-area was great, and, the staff & clientele was most enjoyable.

I have two minor complaints: there isn't a separate thermostat for each room (a common problem at B & Bs, and the room was a little warm at night). Also, parking is a problem when the property is fully booked (another common problem at B & Bs.)

I will defintely stay here again. The minor inconveniences noted above are just that--minor inconveniences.

  • Liked — The food and the staff.
  • Disliked — The rooms were kept too warm at night for my taste. But, I keep my house colder than normal.

We brought our elderly dog and he was very comfortable on the porch opening onto the inner courtyard, and also in front of the fireplace at the Cottage. We were fearful that the beautiful tile floors would be too slippery for him, but that was not the case. They had plenty of traction and there were also several area rugs. This is our third visit but the first under the new owners and they were absolutely responsive to our every need, including putting us first on the cleaning list so we could be there with the dog while the cleaning took place. We visited (inadvertently) during a tremendous snowfall but what a great place to be snowbound. We stayed for over a week and were able to WALK to the downtown for many delicious meals and to Canyon Road for art and flamenco. Of course we had the kitchenette and the complimentary basket of delicacies, as well. Perfect. Plenty of firewood right outside the door, and lots of privacy. The furniture is well-placed, and from the photos we took we must have spent a good part of our vacation sleeping and reading on the leather couch in front of the fireplace. The living room is especially comfortable. For this unit you have to be able to climb a circular stairway to bed and the loft bedroom has low ceilings, so if this is not to your taste, go for another unit. If you want to feel like you LIVE in Santa Fe and are not just visiting, stay here.

The staff was so friendly and accommodating--they were truly enjoyable. The owner was very friendly and attentive to detail. We stayed in the Nicholas room and the Pinion casita. Both were very large and had touches that made us feel like we were in a home. Art work, fresh flowers etc. The sheets were very nice and the mattresses were way above average. The hot breakfast and wine and cheese in the afternoon were fabulous. Great experience. We will be back.
