Here's the inside story from a real local: Evangelo's is one of the last "un-gentrified," "un-cutesey-pie'd," "un-let's make it slick for the tourists-ified" places left in Santa Fe where I can take Tia Lena for a drink, listen to some blues or jazz, and meet a bunch of our amigos. Evangelo's is as genuine as the astonishing variety of folks you'll meet there.
Nick, the owner-bartender, stocks more kinds of beer (except Bud---ask him why) than I've ever seen in one place, and really does mix the best margaritas in Santa Fe, a cliched claim that many places make but none can back up. No credit cards, no checks, and it's "order at the bar and don't wait for a waiter to come to you" --- but in return you get a lot of fun, a reasonable tab, and if you time it just right on Saturday afternoon, some of the finest New Orleans-style jazz outside Orleans Parish. And all of this is just a half-block from the Plaza! As we say at Fiesta: "Vamanos! Por que no?"
