Surprisingly large and diverse art collection in a contemporary and beautiful building. Don't skip this one, it's well worth a visit.

When in Santa Fe, the State Capitol, known as the Roundhouse because it is based on the state flag, is not to be missed. Its curving hallways are lined with excellent New Mexican art of all kinds. We spent nearly 2 enjoyable hours looking at three floors of art. All free, of course. You can also peek into the two chambers.

I recently visited New Mexico's State Capitol known as the Roundhouse. The capitol is unique for many features. The first of them that it is round, not designed like the US Capitol in Washington, D.C. which is quite usual for other states. The Roundhouse, as it is known here, is designed to be like a kiva, the place where the people of the pueblos held meetings, and some still do. I think it is worth a visit, however, because for the collection of art by New Mexico artists of all stripes which line the interior walls. There are representational paintings and abstract works. What's more the Roundhouse is free to visitors. I recently visited the Roundhouse at the end of January when I got a bonus: the state legislature was in session. During the one month of the legislature--beginning early in Januay through the first week in February every day is a colorful day of visiting constituents, flamenco dancers, American Indian dancers and other colorful people from every corner of the state. Visitors can attend actual sessions of the house and senate which often have constituents performing at the beginning of the session. I recently saw a choir perform at the beginning of one senate session and a flamenco group performing in the rotunda.

When it compare to the Capitol building in Santa Fe with the one in Austin, TX, it is nothing. In my thought Santa Fe capital building is what it needs for a small state like NM.
