I am so happy that a friend mentioned this building for it's art collection, otherwise I do not think we would have visited. We were there on the day before the legislature was to open. We were welcomed at the front desk and told we could view the art collection. We took an elevator to the top floor and then meandered through the corridors viewing a most beautiful art collection. Art pieces from New Mexican artists in all genre; paintings, sculpture, prints, textiles. We spent almost 2 hours, not wanting to miss any of the hallways. We even had a rest in the lounge of the Office of the Governor.

We collect state capitols. There is some great art work in this one although the architecture is nothing outstanding. But the display on the various types and ratings of chilis is very interesting.

One of the hidden treasures of the Roundhouse is the amazing art that is available on site. Don't miss it!

The New Mexico state capitol building has three floors of New Mexican art of all kinds. Admission to the building is free and a security sign-in is all that's required to make a 3-floor self-guided tour. We visited when the legislature was not in session so we had a very quiet review of the art and access to the main legislative chambers. This building is only two blocks north of the downtown river, an easy walking distance or there is plenty of parking, at least when the legislature is not in session. It's exhilarating to see a state's investment in its cultural heritage which is made available to its citizens and visitors.

The building itself is worth visiting, with marble hallways, attractive rotunda, dark wood trim, comfortable seating and ample restroom facilities.

We were told by locals not to miss the "Round House" exhibits. This is truley one of the best exhibits I have seen. And, one of the most beautiful Capital buildings. There are three floors that are packed with some of the most amazing art, furniture and sculptures. Parking is free, easy to get in and out.
