“Wonderful drive to falls”
Reviewed June 19, 2014 via mobile

The scenery on the way to the falls is really nice. The 15 minute hike to the overlook is a bit steep but very pleasant. The falls themselves are not very impressive. Worth the trip but not as interesting as tent rocks or Ghost Ranch.

“Great little known camping retreat, close to Albuquerque!”
Reviewed June 11, 2014

We heard about this place from a friend and I have to say, my husband and I had no idea there was such a great camping spot so close to us (in Albuquerque)! It is just a couple of streets past Buffalo Thunder resort and then 8 miles up the trail to the ranger station. Nambe offers many great campsites, from pulling right up next to the creek and pitching your tent amidst all the lush green landscape, to being closer to amenities on the other side of the creek closer to the waterfall. The campistes provide enclosures for shelter, picnic tables, grills, portapotties, and trashcans that get changed by the rangers several times a day. They even sale ice and sodas back at the station. Unfortunately, the lake was still closed, I believe there was a fire resulting in a lot of debris in the water. The trail up the falls, is very fun, a little rigorous for my 4 & 8 year old but they made it, and what a site to behold at the top! Back at the campiste, we had fun playing in the creek, doing some light tubing, and grilling on our propane grill (there were some fire restrictions in the state of NM). The rangers leave around 7 and you are locked in until they return at 8am or so. We have camped at Elephant Butte, the Pecos, Jemez, but Nambe is definitely our favorite, their is nothing quite like sleeping under the stars in a clean campsite hearing the creek babbeling besides you.

“All this water a welcome change from arid scenery”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

The last I heard, the lake was still closed. A forest fire in the watershed has resulted in a continuing flow of debris into the lake. They dredged the lake once, and it filled again.

However, the debris settles in the lake, so the waterfall and the ponds and the stream are all clear. You hike up the stream and eventually pass through a narrow passage through high rock cliffs that you may seen in the Billy Crystal - Jack Palance movie City Slickers. To enter you have to walk in the cold stream through the passage.

You come to the first pond with one of the three falls pouring into it. It's clear, cold, and suitable for wading even by children. You can swim across it and climb to the next pond and falls -- I have -- admittedly it is cold..

It is on the Nambe Reservation and they don't worry about liability. So, you don't find the fences and guardrails you might see in similar places.

It is on the High Road to Taos -- so you can combine it with a visit to the Sanctuario or Taos.

You pay by the automobile -- $10 -- so it is inexpensive for a family

“Falls are ok sight, Lake is closed”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

We saw their website and thought it would be an easy & nice visit during our recent trip to Santa Fe. We paid our $10/car fee at the entrance to a friendly ranger and drove to the parking lot. We hiked about 10 minute to reach the overlook of the falls, which is an interesting view in the middle of the dessert. The path in several areas is very narrow and we would recommend to take extra caution, especially with younger kids. It was disappointing to find out that the Lake has been closed for about 2 years. The friendly ranger did not know when it would open up again. If you like camping and barbecuing there are many spots. There is an extra fee for that.

“Great "stretch break" on the high road to Taos.”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

I wouldn't recommend this being your sole destination, but if you're driving the High Road to Taos this makes for a great break in that drive (coming from Albuquerque). The hike is short, but it is quite amazing to see such a sight in the midst of high desert country. I'd also recommend calling ahead to make sure it's open. We saw signs posted it was only open on weekends, but didn't see that on the website we visited prior to stopping. Thankfully we hit it on a Saturday.
