“Best Place in Santa Fe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

We love Bishop's Lodge and have stayed every year for many years. Away from the hustle and bustle of the Plaza. The rooms are large and comfortable. The grounds are lovely. Great amenities. The pool is great (except that kids can get noisy, particularly in the afternoon). The staff really makes an effort. I had a superlative hot stone message from Jennifer this year. We tend to eat our meals at the Tesuque Market -- since the F&B is nothing to write home about.

Room Tip: Get a second floor room -- which have better light, views and porches. The second floor porches are...

Staying at one of the villas provided beautiful views of Santa Fe's Sangre de Christo Mountain. The villa was a beautiful example of southwestern architecture and design. The numerous patios allowed for outdoor relaxation. Although we found the villa comfortable the bedding was not fresh and smelled of dust for too much time between guests. Several doors could not be locked, screens needed replacing, patios needed to be swept and cleaned, sliding glass doors were off track. Bathtubs are slippery having no bath mats of any type. Bath rails are not provided. Staff is very helpful and courteous when complaints are made but management does not pay attention to the details of running such property smoothly:Accommodations promised at time of booking are not honored at arrival. My family which includes a toddler and a senior citizen had to drive to 3 separate villas since the first did not meet accommodations requested. A key given to the pool did not work and 1 1/2 hours was used waiting for correct key, heater in pool was not working and had to drive to another pool. Such a beautiful and unique property deserves more detailed attention from management in order to allow guests a truly pleasurable experience. Management has dropped the ball and does not utilize the full potential of what a resort can provide to make guests comfortable.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review about Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort & Spa.
I first would like to thank you about tor the nice comments mentioned in your review about our wonderful Villas. After researching your stay, I discovered the reservation specialist did not provide you an ADA room you may have needed. You booked a Villa that did not have the requirements for ADA. Our vials are very high end and are not really equipped for the stay and accommodations you required. We sincerely apologize for that.
Our villas are privately owned; Bishop’s Lodge manages over 10 of them separately. Each villa is thoroughly inspected 24 hour upon a guest arrival. As you can see from most of our reviews from previous Villa guest on Trip Advisor they usually rave about the accommodations and surrounding views. Our villas are the best product we offer our guest they are located high have the resort and are nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Natural wind and storm elements may have had a part in the outdoor patio area. When you checked out you were very happy about us reducing your rate from $699 per night to $349 per night. We had hoped this had compensated for your concerns and our mistake. We addressed your concerns in the proper manner. If you feel we did not do enough or go beyond your expectations please feel free to call us we would like to change your perception and experience.

This was a great choice, Bishops Lodge is an exceptional resort. The food was excellent, the chef came out and greeted us almost everyday and spoke to us about the menu. The horseback riding trails were absolutely gorgeous and the wrangler that took us on a private ride was terrific. Joaquin, made our riding experience that much better with his interesting conversation and great respect for the horses. The grounds are breathtaking, there is no need to ever leave the lodge. The person that pulls it all together is the manager, Rick Verruni . He greeted us when we arrived and spoke with us about how we were enjoying our stay everytime we saw him. His attention to detail is amazing.Every employee, from the manager,to the wait staff, wears a tag with their name and where they are from on it. Its interesting to see where everyone is from and also a nice way to start a conversation..This resort is run to perfection. Cant wait to go back.

Room Tip: We stayed in 242 it was near the top of the mountain, great location, beautiful room.

This is an older, more established resort. It seems like the rooms were all built at different times, some look different than others. We stayed in a condo that overlooked the horse barn so we dealt with the constant coming and going of horses (and thier smell). But what this resort has is class. each condo has a large balcony area where you can sit and enjoy the scenery. The condo's were a little dated, but were clean and had enough space for us. The spa and resturant were nice. The pool area was well kept, clean and the adjoining bar was stocked and the staff was friendly. This resort has a country feel that is not for everyone, as some other reviews will show. But, being from Texas, we enjoyed the well established trees and the laid back atmosphere. Oh, parking is tricky. be prepared to walk.

Room Tip: Parking seems like it was an afterthought. Choose a room with adequate parking or be prepared to wal...

The rooms were commodious. And there's history here. And it is in a sort-of rural area of Santa Fe, not that rural exists anymore in this sprawling city. That's the good news.
The bad news is that this is a place the time of which has come and gone. The floor in our room dipped in the corner. What was underneath? The decor is 1980's and not a good 1980's at that.
Here's what it needs in no particular order. A new landscape designer. You have to drive from your rooms to the main building because there are no walkways unless you use the road. A new landscape architect will cut down the trees planted in front of the balconies that were designed, probably, to offer a view of the mountains beyond. The trees block the view. And they would prevent the runoff that in rain occurs on the roads and sidewalks. This can be managed.
Then they need to hire a new chef. I can do eggs better than they can. A mango chicken dish was bathed in some kind of cheese gravy. Where is the fresh, light cuisine that so many Santa Fe restaurants have heralded?
Then they need a whole new housekeeping strategy. Our bed had been made in our room when we returned at 4 pm, but nothing else had been done. How about instituting a checklist that every staff member follows to make sure they've done the small tasks that makes a guest's stay just normal? We haven't even talked about the decor, which needs tightening up, with a good designer who orders sheets not filled with polyester.
This place needs a new owner, a new manager, a complete redesign in both architecture, landscaping and interior design and a whole new strategy for making guests feel that the basics are covered.
I didn't try the spa, but spas are now a cliche. You need other features to attract guests.
We came because of its history. We won't return and we will not recommend it to friends. I predict this hotel will go under within a year.

Room Tip: you can't.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. All guest feedback is very important to us. Thank you for acknowledging our wonderful history. This year we celebrate a historic milestone of 95 years of being a historic hotel of America with many years of tradition and preservation efforts.

Our décor reflects the authentic Santa Fe experience most of our guest have come to love and enjoy. Our natural landscape elements that dates back 156 years creates our setting of 450 acres of pristine national forest. This natural architecture is what sets us apart from any downtown hotel. We incorporate the national forest as a element in our preservation efforts and do not cut any trees unless it’s very necessary and is consulted with an expert. We also consult with our neighbors and HOA before doing design changes to the property in efforts to preserve our wonderful historic resort founded by Arch Bishops Lamy.

Our Culinary team is top notched. If your meal was unsatisfactory our Restaurant Manager would have gladly have corrected any issues you may have encountered. Our culinary staff has recently received thank you letters from big organizations as well as visiting guest like Disney, NERA, HP and our New Mexico Governor. We pride ourselves in serving the best meals to our entire guest daily.

I’m truly sorry you did not find your stay satisfactory. Most of our guest enjoy the peace, calmness and serenity of our beautiful location and come back for all the features we offer like no other in town. I invite you on your next visit to allow us to introduce you to our world renown Sha Nah spa, a massage treatment in a tepee e, horseback riding, horseshoes, volleyball, free yoga, hiking trails, mountain biking, drumming circles, tennis, kids camp, Equus experience or just lounge and relax in one of the best swimming pools in Santa Fe.

We value your patronage and feedback.

I stayed in room 254 for one night; a single floor room next to a maintenance room which has a constantly running generator. This is the only non 2 story room in the Vista de Valle building, plus it is next to a generator room. Close enough that the headboard vibrates. When checking out, the front desk clerk’s reply to my complaint was “at least you don’t owe any additional room charges”. The room had a gift basket with chips and salsa. Unfortunately, the salsa container was already opened.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In August of 1851, a Frenchman, Jean Baptiste Lamy, arrived in the NM Territory as the first Bishop of Santa Fe. Here he built a private retreat; his chapel still stands today, now on the national register of historic places. After Lamy's Death, the land was acquired by the Pulitzer publishing family as a private vacation retreat. In 1917, the Thorpe family from Denver fell in love with these pristine acres, bought the property and developed the first resort in the state. Today Bishop's Lodge comprises 15 lodges for a total of 110 rooms ranging in sizes from 250 sq feet to 450, not to mention a 2000 sq foot Presidential Suite. Many of our rooms feature fireplaces and the majority all have outdoor access to patios, lawns or balconies. Our ShaNah Spa and Wellness Center which opened up in June of 2002 is a sanctuary where one can take time out to be nurtured by Mother Nature, guided by ancient wisdon and touched by angels. The experience may change your life. Other activities are abundant such as: trap/skeet shooting (offered to groups of 10 or monmre roomnights), horseback, pony trail rides, hiking, mountain biking, fitness center, excercise studio, outdoor pool, whirlpool and tennis to mention a few. Bishop's Lodge is located just 3 miles from the Historic Santa Fe Plaza. Complimentary shuttle service is provided by the lodge at scheduled times daily. ... more   less
