“A Very Special Place in Santa Fe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

I was working in Santa Fe during the end of October this year (2013) and after visiting a variety of similar places to stay I decided to chose Zen River. It was the best place for my travel funds and offered me privacy, comfort, cleanliness, great internet, and convenience to downtown, restaurants and local color. It made the trip fun. I would highly recommend this very special place to others.

Let me be candid and report that it was not a 5-star hotel but that is not how it is advertised and only added to its rustic charm. I took the time to re-read the reviews and believe that those individuals who were dissatisfied appear to have some serious issues with their lives. This is clear by the nature of their unconstructive comments that are most likely to be untrue.

I also compared Zen River with the photos in this website and they do not match. Trip Advisor needs some quality control and verification by discussing the issues with the manager before posting inaccurate information. This would improve your site and its credibility. For me, Zen River was a very special place in Santa Fe.

I have enjoyed staying at Zen River in the beautiful Tesuque Valley on the North Edge of Santa Fe. It is far enough to enjoy the quiet mountain atmosphere but only 7 minutes to downtown Santa Fe. It's a beautiful home, comfortable, relaxing, with gorgeous views. I enjoyed hiking on Windsor Trail and the rocky mountain well water.

Room Tip: There are 3 choices here, good from 1 person to a small family gathering.

I stayed at Zen River for an extended time this fall. The Casa Estrella, the lower of the two units has an open floor plan with a great balcony on the front for stargazing or watching the sunset. It has a full kitchen and bath, with lots of space. The windows allow tons of natural light and breezes- very relaxing. The location is fantastic, in the quiet and peaceful Tesuque Valley, just north of town. It was perfect for access to running, hiking and biking on the Winsor Trail network- miles of trails crisscrossing the Santa Fe National Forest. If you’re up to it, you can leave the front door and hike the 11 miles uphill to the ski basin! Feels like true quiet country living, but a quick drive to the plaza. And if you need to grab a good meal somewhere closer, there’s always the quaint Tesuque Village Market just down the road. Location is very convenient to the Santa Fe Opera. The owner Veronica is a long-time valley resident and super knowledgeable about the area. Wonderful stay, and would recommend highly for weekend trips or longer stays in Santa Fe.

I didn't read the reviews of this place before I stayed there, and I'm glad I didn't. OK, it wasn't the Ritz, but it was clean enough for my VERY picky Mother-in-law. Yes, it's a bit rustic, but it served our needs very well.

If it had been my honeymoon, I might not have been happy, but for a nine-day stay with my family of 5 it was a very affordable "home base" used for sleeping, eating breakfast and washing up, and it worked fine. We had other friends staying in the area with whom we spent the days cruising around Santa Fe, and they paid many times what we did.

The Windsor Trail which is just above the place is a very cool hiking outing, too.

Right on bishops lodge Road!
When you enter these casitas you will find yourself in a clean, relaxing home; 7 peaceful minutes to the square and just a few more to Canyon Road Galleries. I am a Santa Fe artist at Waxlander Gallery. I have stayed at several establishments in Santa Fe and by far this was one of best. I will recommend Zen River to anyone seeking a unique natural location full of local color. The landlord, Veronica, is charming and very honest.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Zen River. The facilities are well designed and appointed by someone who obviously cares about harmony and balance with the environment and providing a comfortable and satisfying experience to the guests. I thought that the landlady managed the property with a nice touch - issues were dealt with in a timely and personable way.
The location is fantastic - very close to the action of Santa Fe yet you can walk right outside your room and access the solitude and natural wonders of the Windsor Trail.

The place was not clean, and the owner/manager first refused to clean it and then entered the unit multiple times without notice, pilfering and moving my belongings around. In the end of the stay she claimed that I moved furniture around and tried to deduct it through the deposit. Definitely serious psychological issues. Dont stay there unless you plan to spend all your time squabbling with the landlord.
