I visit the audubon society every summer when visiting Santa Fe. It is free admission, although they do have a suggested donation to help with costs. The volunteers that I have run into there are always more than willing to talk birds and animals and are very knowledgable about the local wildlife. The hummngbird feeders and bird feeders close to the visitors center are especially satisfying for amateur birdwatchers like myself as many different birds are there and gives one a good chance to see them up close. The loop path is an easy walk with benches, but not shaded so it can get warm. There is a spur trail that extends into the woods for those who have more time. This path is not as well maintained as it is just that, a hiking trail. I have seen deer, big birds, small birds and just some quiet time away just a short trip from the Plaza/Canyon Road. The store is well stocked and you can borrow binoculars too!

We stopped by here about an hour before they closed one day so we didn't get to explore too much. The scenery is beautiful and the trails are easy to moderate. It is a good place to bird/wildlife watch and it is convenient to get to. The staff were friendly and helpful in identifiying a couple of birds on the feeders that I had never seen before. It's a nice retreat after a day of shopping and sightseeing.

This is a lovely, large area at the end of Upper Canyon Rd. run by the Audubon Society. It was the home of artist Randall Davey who deeded the land to the society. It is great for bird watching and doing some easy and moderate hiking on the trails in the area. There are some beautiful scenic views. It is worth a trip out to this oasis.
