The Santa Fe ski area is a great place to take a drive like we did on a gorgeous, sunny fall day and take some pictures of the magnificent colors as leaves start to change this time of year. The road is windy and narrow in spots, but pretty well maintained overall. There are several areas to stop along the way for scenic pictures, do some hiking, or have a picnic. There are also a couple of campgrounds in the Santa Fe National Forest along the way, although most campgrounds require paid reservations for overnight camping and a fee for daytime use.

Once at the top - the ski basin is approximately 15 miles north of downtown Santa Fe - there is plenty of parking. Dogs are allowed on leashes, and there is no fee to walk around the grounds or hike up the mountain itself for the day. Several hiking trails abound, most of which are marked. We did not notice any restroom facilities open at the ski area since the ski facilities themselves were closed until snow season. There were also no food or water facilities open or available.

Summer chair lift rides are no longer offered this time of year, and there is a fee for those rides during the summer.

Skiers are eager for Ski Santa Fe to open, usually right before Thanksgiving holiday if there is enough snow, but don't wait to enjoy the ski area in the fall for a relaxing scenic day excursion.

We took the drive up to the ski center in mid September and were stunned by it's beauty. The terrain is full of firs and Aspen trees, great views of the mountains, and lots of hiking trails and picnic areas. Definitely worth the drive even for the most sedentary.

While working for a company in Santa Fe, the Florida ladies decided we were going to ski! Of course the office laughed and had a broken leg pool. Simply excellent instructors, very well supervised, just a great experience - and if you can during the work week, very likely to almost have the mountain to yourself!

Owners are spending some bucks updating the facility. I can't wait to see the finished product. If they had a hotel on-site...hint hint. Bottomline, good place to spend the day skiing and the updates should really impact the overall experience.
