Owner description: Constructed in 1610 by the Tlaxcalan Indians of Mexico, who came to New Mexico as servants of the Spanish, this is the oldest church still in use in the country.

This is a beautiful old church of which was the first in North America(circa. 1660). I have been to France and seen many of the old churches there and this one is comparable on the inside. If you are religious you will feel at home. If not, it is a beautiful site to see.

I have lived in the West my entire life. Here it is exciting to see something over 100 years old, so imagine my surprise and delight to see a building dating back to the 1600s! Those dogged Franciscans brought things from Spain to decorate and enhance their church, so there are artifacts even older than this--including a bell from 1356 and a likeness of Saint Michael himself from the 1400s. How amazing to have something one would expect to see in Europe in the western U.S.

Visiting "the oldest church in the US" was something I looked forward to - until I arrived. There must have been some display, show, or other event being planned there, but the large screen blocking the former altar, the paraphernalia scattered about, the lights and loud noises all made it impossible to appreciate the historical significance. My experience was thoroughly ruined.

They were preparing for a concert when we arrived, but fortunately we got to peek in. The altar screen is carved in the primitive Spanish colonial style and is worth seeing. The gods shop prices are reasonable unlike in other Santa Fe locales.

This is a great and special place to see on your trip. It is like stepping back in time and is completely authentic and local. There are no fancy tours or presentations, it is just a beautiful and serene space that is lovely to visit. It is the oldest church in the USA and you should see it at the very least for that reason.
