Owner description: Canyon Road is Santa Fe's historic arts district. Home to over eighty art galleries, as well as boutiques, restaurants, and historic adobe homes, it is the cultural center of Santa Fe. The galleries on Canyon Road show everything from traditional southwestern Pueblo pottery and quintessential Western art to contemporary abstraction and computer and digital art. Take time to explore; there's a little something for everyone here.

It has some excellent but expensive restaurants. The galleries range from excellent to awful. The better galleries tend to be at the bottom of the road -- near Paseo de Peralta

The Christmas lighting along Canyon Road is so sublime. You might expect the galleries to stay open after 5 for the holiday shoppers but 90% of them don't. The gallery owners say "no one comes" but I'm betting if they advertised late-night gallery openings…at least until 7…many tourists and working locals would spend time shopping for unique gifts. Since they have made it a habit to close, its no wonder "no one comes." In addition, if you expect the galleries to be open on Christmas Eve during the famous farolito walk, most of them don't. The gallery owners we talked to said that people come for the revelry…period. I would think Santa Fe is missing a bet by not embracing and promoting the holidays to the same extent that they do the summer season. Make it special, they will come!

We walked around this area on Thanksgiving, so many of the galleries were closed. We still had a wonderful time! There were many amazing outdoor sculptures and we took many photos with friends. It was a great way to get some exercise before eating our Thanksgiving buffet. We always enjoy visiting the galleries when they are open also. There is something for everyone to enjoy.

More galleries than you can see in a day, but certainly worth wearing yourself out (a little) by getting through as many as you possibly can. Oh ya, and a fat checkbook doesn't hurt either (LOL) !!

Canyon Road is on an incline, so if possible you might want to try catching the free "Santa Fe Pick-Up" (A small shuttle bus) and taking it to the top, walk down to the bottom, and then wait for the "Santa Fe Pick-Up". I believe there are 4 stops on Canyon Road. We took two hours just for this trip, walking down taking pictures and spending a hort while at each gallery (I read there are over 100).

We have been to Canyon Road several times over the years.
