“Nice Surprise!!!!!”
Reviewed May 24, 2007

In a world full of disappointments (as far as lodgings go) the El Rey was a pleasant surprise. The retro style and good management went a long way to making our Santa Fe trip a success. OK, the furniture is a little shabby and the rooms need a little more TLC, but on balance it’s a great place to spend a few days. We enjoyed it immensely. It’s a nice change of pace from the standard, cookie cutter chains and a much better bargain than the trendy, yuppie, overpriced Santa Fe so called “resorts”. It’s on our “A” list.

Let me start out by saying that the El Rey is NOTHING FANCY, but what a GREAT place to stay. My mother and I stayed here earlier this week while on a road trip between Seattle and San Antonio.

El Rey is located on the old Route 66 and is not located in downtown Santa Fe, but as we were driving a 12' moving truck, this was desirable to us. Of all the hotels on this stretch of road, El Rey definately looked the best, in fact as far as we were concerned, the place was absolutely immaculate. Our room (#30 w/ two queen size beds) was a steal at $109, roomy and verycomfortable. The grounds were beautiful, but unfortunately, our stay was so short that we didn't get to utilize the pool or jacuzzi.

The only thing that would have made the El Rey better would be if they had wifi in the rooms, but they had it in the lobby/breakfast room, so that was ok!

I'd recommend this hotel to anyone and I'd love to go back and spend more time!

We stayed at the El Rey three nights. Although the complex is older, it is up to date and spotlessly maintained. The carpet was freshly cleaned. Excellent breakfast. The staff was super, attentive and informative. We had one of the lower-price rooms, which was a tad small, but very comfortable, with good-quality fixtures. There are charming courtyards and gardens throughout the complex.Although it's on busy Cerrillos Rd, and we had a unit right at the road, there was absolutely no noise problem. Next time I go to Santa Fe, I won't even consider anything else.

Arrived Santa Fe late night and pulled in to check on motel; staff friendly; rooms clean and loved the decor. Our room had a small kitchenette and nice bathroom. They also had a guest laundry which was great. The breakfast(incl) was a very nice spread. Location was good as we had a car and there were restaurants/t'aways nearby. Quiet and no problems at all. Also had a computer in the lovely common room (coffee here) for free internet access.

I live in NJ and flew to OKC for my Mom's 80th birthday on February 8, 2007. She is very mobile and young attitude so I wanted to drive her to Santa Fe, NM, for a few days for a birthday celebration. I read some reviews about El Rey Inn and decided to stay there. Called hotel directly and very friendly. I got room 67, which is a King suite. We LOVED it!! Mom had her own bedroom with King bed in the very back, huge closet, own tv. Door separated from huge living room. I slept on pull-down Murphy bed, which was surprisingly very comfy. I enjoyed the gas Kiva fireplace in the living room throughout the night/s. Small, but beautiful, bathroom with glass block window. Hotel is charming and adorable but on VERY busy street, Cerillos; however, it is easy from there to get everywhere in Santa Fe: Museum Hill, downtown museums, Taos; etc. We thought the place was like an apartment, it is way in back of the property and is like living in a lovely lovely complex. Close to swimming pool (not open this time of yr) and one of their hot tubs. Beautiful antiques in room. We decided to stay an extra night and only available was Room 82, which is a 1700-1750? square foot, essentially a HOME! They say it sleeps six but you could have more in there if you had young children: big gas fireplace in first living room, huge full-service kitchen and fridge, huge 'family' room (with another pull-down Murphy bed); huge master bedroom, 1 and 1/2 bathrooms. Everything southwestern decorating and very clean. One fully enclosed outdoor patio, another patio at the back that I used to go to another hot tub (fully enclosed with a fireplace I guess they light at night?). We could have played soccer in there. We had a plumbing problem one a.m. at the first room, overnight gal came and cleaned up and gave us a key to next door room to get cleaned up for the day. It was all fixed after we returned from a day-long tour. If you want views of Santa Fe, this isn't the hotel for you; if you want style, comfort and convenience to tourist areas and restaurants, this is for you. Oh yeah, it is directly across the street from a Baskin Robbins and there are many take-out places on the street. The day we arrived we ate down the street at Tecolate (mexican-good). The last evening we ate at Tomasita's off of Cerrilos and Guadalupe. I grew up in the southwest and that may be the best margarita and definitely best sopapillas I've ever had. ENJOY!

We stayed at the El Rey Inn for two nights in late January. We chose it based in part on previous reviews and the very reasonable price ($84/night plus taxes for a traditional double room with two queen beds).
The room was very pleasantly furnished and attractively decorated - suprisingly so given the economical off-season price. The beds and bedding were comfortable.
The pool was closed for the season, but there were hot tub/spas available. The breakfast area was especially nice with a welcoming crackling fire in the kiva-style fireplace. The complimentary continental breakfast was fine. The coffee was particularly good, but how bad could it be when being savored beside a nice warm fire on a cold, snowy morning in the mountains?
The location is convenient even though it is a few miles to the center of the historic area. We dined at a neaby recommended restaurant, The Flying Tortilla, and enjoyed the food. A word of caution, though, don't order the chocolate cake unless you are a serious chocoholic with a huge appetite.
Santa Fe is one of our favorite getaway spots. Places like the El Rey Inn help make it so.

We stayed here for Christmas 2006 and could not have been happier. The rooms are relatively small but very clean, well-kept and tastefully decorated. It was delightful to return home in the evening.
