Old Town's Plaza is really a pretty place to spend a few hours. There are benches in the plaza, which is tree lined and shady; there are shops around the square catering to tourists; and on one side of the plaza, the Indians from local pueblos, Santo Domingo, Taos and others come to see their jewelry. Most only take cash, but there are those who take plastic. Some of the jewelry is average, most is really good, and some are outstanding! There was a necklace there that I'm still lusting after, but it was too pricey for this lady. I did buy two pairs of turquoise earrings (the turquoise came from Arizona) for $25 each. Both pairs had the sterling silver earwires and the stones were hallmarked by the maker.

At the "dimestore" I found the perfect tee shirts for my two sons. Homeland Security started here! I know they'll get a kick out of them!

So this is pretty clearly tourist central in Santa Fe. All the big historical sites are clustered here, and the streets are lined with stores catering to tourists needing expensive knickknacks.

It's definitely worth at least half a day, just to browse through the shops, take in the architecture and sights and explore. The jewelry vendors with their wares on blankets are fun to browse through even if you have no interest in buying anything.

I felt completely safe here. There are a couple of weirdos walking around, but nothing that came close to feeling threatening.

If you're visiting Santa Fe, you really need to visit this area

I must be missing something--I was not impressed or enchanted or even charmed. It was actually quite scary..and dirty! It is crowded, the sidewalks are small and crumbling, people are rude and there are homeless people in every direction you look. Traffic runs through the plaza and for some reason the folks in the car are blasting music. Every shop has pretty much the same stuff--everything is overpriced and It just doesn't seem genuine. It's trying really hard to be something it is not. When we arrived in one of the parking garages it looked like there was urine in all the corners of the stairs and one place was mopping the sidewalk with bleach--as we were leaving, two men were fighting and the one threw the other into our lane, we almost hit him. The Plaza seemed like the epicenter for the transient population of the southwest--I did not feel safe at times and we left disappointed.

Don't miss a walk through the plaza when you visit downtown Santa Fe. It is part of history and marked the end of the old Santa Fe Trail.

Unique and lovely offerings. Art and local culture combine for a wonderful experience. Come during the week if you want to avoid crowds and give yourself enough time to go in every door. The metro parking on San Francisco is covered and while not cheap is a great convenience. They only take CASH or CHECKS.
